Switching to South Beach? advice please...

Hello ladies - I have spent a lot of time today reading through the posts here. I also bought the South Beach book and have read through it. Here's a little background on my situation...

I did Weight Watchers about 2 years ago and lost 18 pounds (lowest was 147) and maintained for about 8-10 months. However, I found it so boring and hard to keep doing that low-fat lifestyle for some reason - I started getting in a rut of eating the same thing day in and day out and got bored and just let go. After my week-long Jamaican honeymoon last November I came back home and eventually crept back up to 165 pounds (February) before finally saying to myself enough is enough!! I started Atkins and in the 2 week induction period I lost 6 pounds. Since then I've lost 4.5 more...and I'm stuck. I've been bouncing up and down from 154.5 to 156 for the last month or so. I can't break it no matter what I do. Partially b/c I think I'm starting to have a hard time with the Atkins WOL...not that SBD is that much different, but I need a change.

Here's my question - how many of you here did Atkins before starting SBD, and did it help *push* the stall? I just need some advice b/c I really need something that's going to work for me...

I've also seen one Marvi's stats that she does SBD tracking with WW flex points - what's that about?

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

not really the same

sb is low fat dairy and protein...atkins is high fat...that alone is a big difference in calories consumed

many would agree that sb is a healthier long term plan

sb allows yougurt and other milk - calcium is good for you!!

I switched from strict Atkins to a plan very similar to South Beach and that is when I started losing and feeling well. I use a lot of the recipes and finally read the book this weekend and he makes a whole lot of sense and this is practical. I love the recipes by the way.

Most of us do what works for us personally, while following the general guidelines of SB. While SB claims not to be "low carb," many of us came from Atkins and still hold on to the low carb idea. Also, you are not supposed to count anything - calories, carbs, etc, but I know, for me, calories definitely count, and if I'm trying to lose, I have to watch them.

There are a few of us who came from various stages of Atkins - personally I lost most of my weight on it, and switched mostly for maintenance. Denise tried it and didn't feel well, so switched right away. Lisa did a mix of Atkins/SB for most of her 100 lb loss, and recently switched to strict SB for medical reasons and to lose the last few pounds. Marva does mostly low carb/P1 type eating with a few extra grains and fruit here and there. It's all about finding whatever works for you. There are lots of great ladies here, and we encourage you to jump right into our daily check in, exercise and challenge threads.

Hi Traci, I've done WW off and on for years and Atkins 72 also within the last couple of years, along with Suzanne Somers, Sugarbusters, etc. . I've only followed Atkins with SBD once and it wasn't to break a stall, it was just because I like the plan, even though I'm sure I was stalled.

I wasn't ever good at adding good carbs into Atkins like he intended, I abused it with too much protein and fat and totally do myself in on WW because I always end up doing the refined stuff .

This time I started off with SBD induction and have followed it through the last 4 months and love it. It has given me structure and set limits, yet has given me good choices.

I do track with WW flex points but it's just my thing and a way I keep my calories accountable. It is also a habit. I'm allowed 22 points daily right now and if my food counts stay within my points, I've eaten about 1200 calories so that's good I thing, some days I go over, some I go under. Other than that, I don't count anything just try to use good judgment. I have discovered that I'm a sugar/refined carb addict. Strange how it has taken me so long to realize that.

Good luck! We're here to support you, I think you'll love it!

Thank you all so much for your advice...I really need something thats going to work for me. Also - here is my other challenge that I've had. My husband refused to do Atkins with me - he just couldn't convince himself that it was a healthy WOE. We talked for a long time last night and I showed him the highlights in the SBD book. He was much more intrigued and actually agreed to try it with me. My husband is fairly lean - doesn't "look" like he needs to lose weight, but says he feels better at a certain weight and that's about 20 pounds less than he is right now. I'm just so excited to finally have him on my "team" so to speak. It's been so hard to do Atkins while he's still munching on chips and sandwiches. Not to mention DH's (and my former) addiction to mexican food...

I have some grocery shopping to do - so I think I'll be starting to do SB officially on Friday or Saturday (off on Fridays and have time to go to the store). Today I'm trying to work my way up to it...Rather than the full-fat pork sausage patties I would normally toss in the microwave for breakfast, I fixed some veggie sausage links. My problem is I have a lot of full-fat cheese to get rid of. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use what I have first then just switch to low-fat/fat-free after that??

Thank you ladies again! I can see that there is a lot of support here and look forward to getting to know everyone here...

hahahaha - not a bad idea - that cheddar will be great in my chili!

I have a bag of shredded part skim mozzerella - will that be ok to eat?
