Replacement for Maple Syrup in Baked Beans

Hi All,

It's sooo close to Grilling season up here in the frigid north and I'm getting excited!

I saw this recipe for baked beans and without Maple Syrup it's about 9g per half cup, which is doable for me. I think the flavor would be missing something though, what would you use to replace the Maple? OR if left out do you think it would taste like Campbell's Pork n Beans? That's what I grew up on and I don't remember those being sweet....though it's been a looooong time haha

Ingredients

2½ cups dried navy beans (optional, but recommended: soak beans in water in the fridge for 6 to 8 hours and then drain)
8 oz bacon, cooked and diced (organic and/or local recommended)
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 onion, quartered
1 – 15 oz can plain tomato sauce
¾ cup pure maple syrup
3 tablespoons yellow mustard
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
black or red pepper, to taste

SF syrup. You could get some Mapeline (look in your extracts aisle. blue & white pkg) and follow the recipe using your artificial sweetener of choice.

Unsure of carb/sugar counts on Mollasses...but maybe that also. yum.

I would get the lowest carb sugar free syrup I could find (beware, some are pretty high carb). Walden Farms is zero carbs, I think, and I like the taste. Or you could just use whatever sweetener you like, and add a bit of maple extract. Personally, I don't like sweet baked beans, so it is not an issue for me.

I would use some powdered erythritol and about 1/4 tsp. blackstrap molasses and maybe a bit of maple extract, I prefer the Frontier brand over the Mapeline.

If you can tolerate maltitol, Joseph's SF pancake syrup is delicious. If not, then I'd go with the Walden Farms. It's my second fave and no maltitol, IIRC.

buttoni: "maple extract"? I use Mapleine (which is an artificial flavor, not an extract). I don't think I've ever seen maple extract. Seems like a real extract would be handy to have. Who makes that? (And thanks in advance)

I prefer Walden Farms Pancake Syrup. I can use as much as I want, love the flavor, and no intestinal issues.
