One Week Done!

So, OK, one week into this again and I have lost one pound. Kept DD's at about 500-600 and UD's at 1550ish. Clearly I will not make much progress at this rate. It's the UD level I think. If I was eating 1200 instead of 1500 I may get better results. What say you oh great experienced ones?

I have little experience to lend since I've only calculated my own stuff a few times at different times of my life, but...
According to a calculator that did Mifflin-St. Jeor calculation, at your age, weight given a lightly active lifestyle:
You need 1,465 Calories/day to maintain your weight. (10,255/week)
You need 965 Calories/day to lose 1 lb per week. (6755)
You need 465 Calories/day to lose 2 lb per week. (3255)

They say 1lb fat = 3500 calories.

I would decide what you want to lose and how fast, then calculate your macros (Calories/Fat/Protein/Carb) percentages based upon that, plugging in just how many carbs you want to take in daily as the starting point, then add protein/fat calories as per whichever protocol you like be it straight Atkins or whatever.
Calculate how much you think you can get by with on your DDs and give the balance over to your UDs.
All of this is variable as to how may DDs you plan to have each week.

I am loathe to mention what I have calculated for myself as it would likely cause a knee-jerk reaction for some. I know that I really could not maintain on much more than 1200/day when I lost weight a few years ago, so I am hinging some of my calculations on my known highly efficient fat storage system.

That's how I'm doing it, but then again, I am only just beginning losing weight this way. Others may have significantly more experience.

Suze, one pound per week is FINE! Do not lower your UD calories unless you're not losing anything for several weeks. This board has shown time and again that many of us lose more slowly or stall completely when we lower our calories too soon. Plus, when you get to maintenance, you surely do not want to have to limit to much lower calories because you let your body become accustomed to them.

I calculated again and at my age, weight, height and 30% I am at 1555 to maintain and 457 DD, little or no exercise factored in. So, days at 1555 equals 4665 plus 3 days at 465 equals 1395. Average for 6 days is 865. I didn't actually use the alternate day method but used 4 UD's and 3 DD's, which is of course same as the 4:3 plan. Maybe that is the culprit.

I wouldn't lower my UD calories unless hog tied and forced to, myself. If you're losing, you're doing great where you're at! I would keep doing what works unless it just stops working. (which is not where you're at, IMO!) XO

Using the numbers you gave as your 4:3 plan, I get a daily average of 1087. I wouldn't go lower! You don't have massive amounts to lose so one pound a week sounds great. Congrats on the first week!

I agree with the others ... being not so far from goal (compared to me! I'm sure to you it feels like a long way!) one pound is great. And here's the thing about cutting calories now: if at some point you hit a plateau, or need to reduce calories just because you've lost weight and you don't need as many, it will be hard to cut more. So I think don't do it before you have to! Also, sometimes JUDDD is funny ... you might lose 1 pound one week, no pounds one week, three pounds the next week. Sometimes the first week is not the best week, either! So see what happens, but I'd say you're doing great.

I agree with the others, Suze. You're doing great and losing 1 pound a week is terrific, especially as you get closer and closer to goal. That is weight that will stay off. Don't reduce down to levels that will be hard to sustain for maintenance!

Start Date: JUDDD 1/1/12 + LCHF 12/1/13 (controlling diabetes)
One week does not tell the whole story with JUDDD. It can take between a week and a month for everything to click into place (SIRT1 activate, do some serious cellular clean-up, and get down to supporting weight loss). This is healthy and normal.

I lost a pound a week for four weeks. Then the Magic kicked in and I escalated to to 2 pounds a week - which I rode all the way home (had to reduce DD/UD calories down slightly one time after losing 35 pounds).

I encourage you to give your calculated numbers a few weeks before you start tuning calories.

Like everyone said- Please don't lower UD calories. If you truly feel a need to lower calories lower DDs, but I wouldn't touch a thing at this point. Stick with these numbers for a few weeks at the vey least. A pound a week is just great!

My gosh, thanks everyone for your thoughtful posts! This is truly a wonderful group of people! I will stay on track. You know, I was sort of stuffed eating 1500 cals but it is fun. So would you do the classis every other day or 4:3? I can go either way depending on results.

EOD is generally faster.

I'm doing 4:3 for the first time, and I'm loving the flexibility-- it really works with my lifestyle -- but I am actually trying to lose weight slowly.

My vote would be for EOD, but I don't really lose with 4:3...in fact, I sort of gain. I'm not the poster child for the program, though, as my UDs are super HIGH, so 2 or 3 in a row gives me a big ole bounce.
