Anyone Have Their IGF-1 Tested?

I finished watching Eat, Fast & Live Longer last night and am now wondering about IGF-1. I found one of those self-referral online labs with a draw sight near me that will test it for $69.

The show made it sound like a huge predictor of all kinds of unpleasant things, but my quick googling last night only found articles about children not growing.

Anyone had it done, or know more about it than what they showed on the documentary?

I haven't, but I'd love to know more. I need to read up on that.

It stands for insulin-like growth factor. Apparently higher levels are tied to higher incidences of cancer and shorter survival rates. The show also mentions heart disease, but I haven't come across that yet in my reading.

There were a spate of recent articles saying protein restriction lowers IGF-1.

Calorie restriction was credited for lowering IGF-1 in the program. Michael Mosely's was cut in half after 4 days of fasting, but went right back up when he resumed normal eating. After a few weeks of 5:2, his levels went back to where they were after the complete fasting.

I am just now reading about this in the book "Life Without Bread". I mean like, just read that a few hours ago LOL. I am in the chapter on cancer and he references this very thing IGF-1. They reference this "IGF-1 levels in people increase if high carbohydrate diets are followed , even if total calories are reduced. " So in that book, it is the low carb diet that is the trick for lowering the IGF-1. Any chance you have this book, or perhaps can get it from the library?

Ooh, I was thinking also why the 2 would differ so. The book was written before Michael Mosely did his works. I know that Life Before Bread was using earlier studies. So perhaps the newer research differs from the older?

The reason I suggest the library for the book is because the section on the IGF-1 is so small. Not even a full page, even though it is on 2 pages.

Ah, here we go. A bit more into the chapter he goes on about the IGF-1. He says that for breast cancer, "researchers found that increased levels of IGF-1 correlated to increased risk factor for perimenopausal women under the age of 50. In postmenopausal women, there was no risk associated with IGF-1 levels. "

So, now it depends on what group you find yourself in Gina.
