Start Date: JUDDD 1/1/12 + LCHF 12/1/13 (controlling diabetes)
CYA in three weeks

I am about to drive to the airport. During vaycay, I will have limited (and expensive) access to the internet. SO, hugs to all my BUDDDs!!! Know I will be fasting whenever possible (rotating? EOD? forget it!) and thinking of you all!!!!

So, I thought I would catch up on the long vaycay. The flights to and from, over storms on the Pacific, were a wee bit exciting. The cruise was opulent. Australia around Sydney and New Zealand were gorgeous, exciting, stunning. The people we met on board and at the various ports were interesting, kind, generous, and downright good.

I weighed 113.4 when I left, 113.6 when I returned.

It was almost perfect.

"Almost"? Why "almost"? you ask.

Because my body is getting weirder and weirder. 2/3 of the way through the trip, after eating LCHF (no rotations) carefully for weeks I ran a test. I ate two cookies.

The good news is my BG barely elevated - about what I would see if I ate a normal meal. I do believe, even before I get the rotations going really well, this implies my pancreas and liver are beginning to work as a team again.

The bad news is that night I started throwing up. After several hours I spoke to the ship's nurse who gave me a pill that calmed things down. The next morning I woke up covered with hives - red blotches everywhere. Port that day was Wellington. DH and I found a pharmacy who agreed I was having a reaction to food and gave me an oral anti-histamine.

Gradually, over the course of the next 24 hours, the hives went away. Gradually, over the course of the next 24 hours, I blew up with major edema.

THIS took a few days to resolve. And apparently the swelling caused some unpleasant side-effects...like an impacted colon that almost sent me to the hospital.

The first week back was mostly spent recovering.

Maybe it was the egg in the cookies? Maybe the flour? Maybe it was something else I ate and the cookie was NBD? Obviously, the body I am used to cruising around in is morphing into a danged delicate thing.

Gonna take some getting used to.

BUT....if you ever have a chance to do Down Under.....DO IT!!!!!!

Oh my gosh, Nancy! That sounds awful. Definitely a reaction to something, but like you say, you can't really know exactly what. The cookies do sound suspect though.

Glad you enjoyed the trip, despite the drama. And coming back basically the same weight? WOW!

Were you on Pacific Princess?

So sorry for the health issues. I have had food reactions on ships that I don't normally have. I have to be careful that I don't eat too much shellfish ie. shrimp cocktails as my legs get bright red and itch. We've been known to by allergy meds and creams in some unusual places. I don't know if they add a preservative on ships or not.

Hope you are feeling better now. Our flight back from Sydney in February was quite a rock and roll trip, too.....

Where are you cruising? What line?

I was on Holland America, the Oosterdam.

In June we do a transatlantic crossing on QM2, September we will be on NCL cruising the Norwegian fiords (and beyond), in December it's a river cruise on the Seine. MORE opportunities for food reactions!
