What pills, vitamins & supplements are you popping! And why!

What pills, vitamins & supplements are you popping! And why!

I take vitamin D3, and calcium each and every day because I "think" they are good for me. I also take about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar ( the one with the mother in it ) every morning for constipation.

I take a senior multivitamin about 4 times a week, usually on my DD.

I take a baby aspirin about 4 times a week, in the evening - because it is good for my heart according to my doctor.

But now I read on the internet that most vitamins do more harm then good, a doctor wrote a book about it . Then I saw Dr. Oz on TV and he said one should not be taking calcium! !!

You may be sorry you asked:

I take calcium and D3, but I have thyroid disease and can't absorb it the way "normal" people can, so I have to supplement. I take a multi-vitamin. I take Atenolol for tachycardia and Synthroid for thyroid. I have a Mirena IUD, so I don't pop that as a pill, but it does release low levels of hormones. Oh, and Benadryl at night to help me sleep. Wow, I'm a total pill-popper.

When I'm suffering from anxiety, I take valerian root. It knocks most people out, but just gets me to relax a bit. Thankfully, my anxiety has pretty much disappeared since my thyroid got regulated.

I'm supposed to take Uloric for uric acid, but I don't.

I've tried the following, all of which did nothing for me (but I do not metabolize supplements the way normal people do, it seems):

Pterostilbene
Resveratrol
Coconut Oil
ACV
Biotin

**many people have excellent results with some or all of the above**

I have discontinued all of those, but am looking into supplementing with Liquid Ionic Magnesium as per the mammoth thread on the playground.

Lately I've been taking:
Vitamin D3
DHA
Zinc
Magnesium glycinate (get constipated without it... my gut flora is damaged from antibiotic rounds for acne)
Soil-based probiotics
Betaine HCL with a big or hard to digest meal.
I started on ptero about a week ago.

More importantly:
I'm about to start eating more homemade fermented veggies to help replace lost gut flora. (Thanks to SlowSure for reminding me how important this is!! One of your recent posts mentioned Dr. Ayers. I knew these things once before but had lost sight somewhere along the way.)

I take calcium and have for years because of doctors telling me to, however, I made a note of the following quote, too, and think it fits here:

“When it comes to bone health, just adding more calcium is like throwing more bricks on a construction site, and hoping that they'll form a building. You also need an architect and foreman -- namely, vitamin D and vitamin K.”

Dr. Peters Natural Health News

If you google this whole quote, you can find the entire article. I recently started taking Vitamin D3 and need to start Vitamin K, I think, too.

Before coffee in the morning I take 150 mg of Pterostilbene.

Sometime during the day, usually lunchtime, I take one Women's Alive 50+ multi-vitamin, one fish oil capsule and half a niacin tablet (125 mg).

In the afternoons on DDs lately I've been taking one more 50 mg capsule of Pterostilbene.

ACV in my water because it seems to eliminate my appetite and also definitely flushes out any extra water my body is holding on to.

That's about it.

Had a blood panel done in January and everything, including vitamin D levels, are great. Several years ago I had a vitamin D deficiency but not since I've been taking the Women's Alive multi. So, I figure that must have everything I need in it. It even has resveratrol in it as I recently noticed when reading the label.

currently have added garcinia cambogia and glucomannan capsules...the gc really seems to be a good serotonin booster for me and my appetite is lessened. I've taken the gluc on its own with no apparent difference, but with the gc it seems to keep me feeling fuller which works for down days.

I've been doing the "one minute cure" thing for a couple of weeks with the food grade h2o2 in water. Not far enough in to know results, but I feel more alert.

What does K2 do for people taking D3? Do you need to take equal amounts of both?

I'm interested to know why taking supplements is considered bad, Leonak. I did not see that program.

I am a sometimey pill popper. Sometimes I take B12 and Probiotics, and I've been taking Amoryn (mood enhancer) every day for a couple of weeks as well.

I take 100mcg k2 with 4000iu d3. I have darker skin, and I need more d, so that equation works for me. I take less during the sunny months when I get out more. Mercola has a great article on the whole k2 situation, and I just read that 45mcg is preventative for damage, double is therapeutic- can help remove calcification from soft tissue and transfer that to bones. I don't take it "every" day, but several times a week.

Hi Cindy!

This is what i read about and/or saw on TV. It really makes me wonder

Dr. Oz explains how much calcium you need: Overdoses can harm your heart - National diets | Examiner.com

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/1...e-to-vitamins/

I also noticed that many of the Dr's mentioned ( I mean Dr. Mercola, Dr. Sinatra, Dr Well's etc. ) also sell the stuff they recommend, that too makes me wonder!! i asked my Dr. what he thought about different supplements, vitamins, etc and he said he just lisitens when patients tell him what they take, that he really did not know much about these types of alternative medicines, so does not say one way or the other as he really does not know!! i asked him if he took any vitamins, and said he does take a multi and when i asked what brand, he told me he was not a "brand" shopper, just bought whatever was on sale!!

This thread inspired me. I feel like I'm taking too many pills, so I went to the pharmacy and got a new multi. It's GNC's Women's Ultra Mega One Daily, and seems to have pretty much all of the good things mentioned in this thread, including a good amount of K, D3, and Calcium. I hope I can just start taking that instead of my calcium and D3 with breakfast, then my multi and another D3 with lunch, and yada yada yada. Oh, it also has 417% of the recommended B-12. I sure hope to get some energy!!

I take a fish oil and a multi vit. I take probiotics on as needed basis. I take a colon health supplement when I have slow bowels.
I think I need to add more magnesium and chromium. I seem to have better weight loss when I do.
Can I get some input on the resveratrol?

Those of you who take chromium supplements but don't have anything to indicate blood sugar dysregulation may want to read some useful overviews about chromium supplementation research findings at Adel Moussa's blog
Suppversity.
If you search his blog for
chromium
there are several useful posts. These include:
Berberine, Banaba (Corosolic Acid), Rauwolfia Serpentina, (Apple Cider) Vinegar, Chromium. Supplements to Improve and Restore Insulin Sensitivity - Serving #2
and
Chromium Picolinate Worsens Insulin Sensitivity in Healthy, Non-Diabetic, Non-Obese Individuals by Up to 25%
Quote:
there is now finally a human study that confirms that chromium, which has never been an "insulin sensitizer", but rather an "insulin release amplifier" that reduced blood glucose in diabetics by simply having them produce even more insulin is not a supplement any healthy man or woman, let alone athlete should consider a staple of his or her regimen.

The long and short: Chromium hampers insulin sensitivity in normoglycemic individuals

Good info Slow.

Do we know anything about Chromium GTF? I switched from picolinate to GTF, but might scrap it all if it's doing harm rather than good.

I took the Chromium GTF out of rotation, for myself and DH. Not sure we're noticing any downside to that.

I *think* the glucosamine/chondroitin is starting to work? I'm also not rowing every day, but every other or every 2, but I definitely notice my knees not crackling as much. My hip still aches a bit but I think that's better too.

a few more weeks to really be able to tell.

I've been looking at all sources of calcium, Vit. D and Vitamin K that I'm taking. This includes a calcium chew, FiberChoice tabs, Vitamin K2, Vitamin D3 and a multi. It all adds up to 1500 mg. calcium; 3200 iu Vit. D (2000 of this is D3); and 190 mcg of Vit. K (100 of this is K2).

I wasn't even aware that my multi has 500 mg. calcium, 800 iu Vit. D and 50 mcg Vit. D.

Does anyone think this is excessive? I saw my doctor today and she said they recommend 2000 iu of Vit. D.

Shirl - I don't know about the rest, but I think you're good on the Vitamin D. Last year at about this time I had a test and was VERY low in vitamin D. This year, I've been taking 5000 IU of D3 (Vitamin D council recommended amount - they say don't take more than 10,000 IU) for the past month or so, and I just had my test this year and my level is great! I will probably go back to 2000 now that it's Spring.

Thanks, Chris, this is so helpful. I didn't even realize I was taking the amounts of each (calcium, D and K) that I am until I actually checked each container.
