Any thoughts on these cholesterol numbers?
Just got my bloodwork done.
Doc called saying I need to go on "Crestor' and to watch my overall fat intake. Any thoughts on this? TOTAL cholesterol 280 HDL 51 LDL 171 TRIGLICERIDES 259 |

I would ignore the Crestor--and check out the blog of Dr. Michael Eades on the uselessness of statins--especially for women.
However, your trigs are really high. Do you eat low carb? I ask because the usual lab range for triglycerides is <100 as 'good.' Eating low carb, my trigs are generally around 50. |

I've been eating mostly low carb but a lot of beef. I do cheat and go totally off low carb. I am also menopausal.

I would never take a statin, no matter what. And that IS a high trig count if you're eating low carb; I would try to figure out why.

yes, Michelle, PROBABLY. some people are just genetically prone to high lipids though and have much less luck controlling with diet.
that triglyceride number either means you are REALLY not eating low carb or else you have this genetic problem or both. you are not new to low carbing. it takes real consistency to get that triglyceride number down. if you can't keep your carbs low enough to really count as low carb, even keeping them under 100 a day will almost certainly help a LOT. but this is every day. and every day. since you do have a hard time staying at an Atkins level of carbs, maybe you should try this. then you have a standard to shoot for that is not either "perfection" or "eat anything because I am cheating." every carb gram counts. so eating at a level like 100 would let you pick a couple of servings of carbs a day so you don't build up such a need to cheat. good luck in any case. this is important. *hug*

With a strict low carb diet (below 50g total and maybe even much lower), you trigs will come down dramatically. No Statin! You are a woman and have not had a heart attack. There is no reason to take it and it may damage your health. Look to the many very well educated people who are speaking out against their use. Maybe try the Weston A. Price Foundation to starters.

I fifth the NO statins!! You couldn't pay me enough to get on the medical establishments bandwagon of life time drugs. You could try what's been suggested for three months and have them retested. Good luck. Stay strong

It would probably be really good to totally restrict all grains as well.
