Recipe for dog cookies (whole wheat and grain free options)
I was making my dog these 2 ingredient cookies and she loves them BUT I got to wondering: I keep her grain free, why was I feeding her whole wheat cookies, even if it was just 1-2T a day?
So I fiddled around and came up with an alternative. Original recipe, my version: 1 cup whole wheat flour (extra may be needed) 3.5oz baby food* (the original recipe I found only called for 2oz, that was too dry) pinch of salt Mix well, divide into 16 pieces, flatten out and bake at 350 for 20 minutes, then 450 for 7 minutes for very crispy cookies. What I came up with: Pulse grain free dry dog food (I use blue buffalo) by 2T at a time in a coffee grinder** until you have about 1.25 cups of "dog food flour" 3.5oz baby food* Mix 1 cup of the flour with the baby food. Let it sit for 5 minutes and, if it feels wet or sticky, knead in the rest of the flour by tablespoons. Divide into 16 pieces, flatten and bake as above. For both recipes: let cool completely before refrigerating in an air-tight container. You could probably leave these at room temp. *I used parchment paper on a steel baking sheet. I don't know if it matters, I don't think they would stick. *I did not roll them out, they're too crumbly for that, but I flattened the pieces between my palms to get fifty cent piece cookies -you want them thin so they get hard and crunchy. *I've made these with a variety of baby foods. She tends to like the beef and veggie; the apple blueberry; sweet potato; spinach and cranberry pear flavors best. You want pure foods, no grains or added starches. **I tried the food processor, my big ninja blender and the coffee grinder. The coffee grinder took longer because of the small amount but I got a finer grind.
