Coconut oil. Count or no??
Okay, so it seems some of you guys count your coconut oil calories and some of you don't.
Can someone tell me why? Which is better? |

It depends how you metabolise it and you only know that through experience - I count the kcals. Likewise in MCT oil...

Okay. So I might just need some more time and experience then. I enjoy the taste of coconut oil, and use it sparingly. But id use it more if it were the best choice for JUDDD.

I haven't been having any CO for quite some time, but I did try drinking the Bullet Proof Coffee for a time, first thing in the morning, and I didn't count them then. And was still losing. But I decided I didn't like the BPC so quit doing it.

Several of us experimented with this a year or two ago. A lucky few did not need to count it, but many of us found that we gained or stalled if we did not count it. It's a great oil, but most of us who use it need to factor it into our calories.

I gained, gained, gained! Quickly! I don't use it now period. I think I metabolize fat poorly. I can eat carbs and sugar, but have to watch fat more than anything.

I count it but I only use one teaspoon at a time. It tastes yummy (especially in fat free, low sugar hot chocolate!) and it gives me energy and kills my appetite immediately after I drink it.
I only use cold pressed, extra virgin coconut oil and I never microwave it. After reading research from several different sources that says microwaving changes it from a healthy fat to a non healthy one, I just stir it into my hot chocolate or camomile tea and it melts on its own. One teaspoon only has about 40 calories. So, if it can keep me from eating a ka-zillion calories on a DD it's a really good buy. IMO eating it makes hair shiny and skin more supple.

I've been meaning to ask about this - I never heard of coconut oil in coffee (or hot beverage) until I joined these boards. What is the benefit of doing this? How do you put in your coffee? Do you still put cream in it?

There are several threads on bullet proof coffee. How to make it, the benefits, etc. Its probably best to search those out as they've got the most information.
I also used to do CO, and was one of the lucky ones who didn't count it and still lost. But I just got to a point where I didn't like it anymore. How I measure and count but don't always consider my HWC cals. Same deal, still losing but I also only use 50-100 cals of HWC so, at the most, I'm only going over each day by 100 cals by not counting it. Maybe I'd lose faster if I counted it but I am happy with my progress so I'm not going to mess with a good thing for now.

Coconut oil 1 TBSP 130 cal good high heat cooking
I've had two jars of the oil for over a year or more. Since I've recovered it.
Coconut butter/manna 1 TBSP 100 purpose of replacing creams, spreads, baking. I'm on my 4 th jar I love the favor. Straine from the jar like peanut butter I chisel the butter out of the jar with a spoon, it goes directly to my mouth. No questions asked! If I'm strict eating I would count the clories for sure. 100 calorie shorts add up fast! YUMMM |

Lol, I love you Ei...
But I don't love CO except in Joy Joys crack, and that I love way too much. I had to count and it was too costly in my book.

Back at you Cindy Kiss
I have used the oil a few times to cook small amount of veggies, carrots, fresh of course. They were tasty. This is and up day for me. I may have to eat some c. Butter and then apply what's left in the jar of c. Oil on my dry dry arms and legs-yikes. That's another thread! |

Thanks! Never even heard of bulletproof coffee before! I want to try for tomorrow but I only have salted butter. I'll have to buy some unsalted. Can't wait to try it out!
Also since I'm at it, what does HWC stand for? I've also seen that everywhere on these forums. Quote:

I think for me, switching to CO in making bulletproof coffee was a wise move. It doesn't take much to make it creamy and frothy! I'm going to include the stats in my counts for now, just because I'm just re-starting JUDDD; we'll see how the first few weeks go. I would be SO lucky if I didn't have to count in my food log. ![]() I've tried a couple different COs....the cold-pressed virgin. I love the coconut flavor/essence, and the only one that really stands out for me is the Now brand. Not sure if that's the best one out there, so I'm going to try a new one when I'm done with this jar.

I don't think that CO in coffee is terrible but it isn't something I really care for. For one thing, I don't like the oil slick on top of the cofee.
Half and half is my favorite. Since starting JUDDD, though, I keep having to throw out my half and half because I find I just don't drink much coffee anymore. I don't do any calories on DDs and I find I would rather do something else with them on UDs.

I hated co IN COFFEE but really like coffee, HWC, kerrygold butter and MCT oil using a little frother to mix it all up. High in calories and It really doesn't seem to make me less hungry so I rarely make it anymore.

I wish I hadn't waited so long before inquiring about coconut oil in coffee!! What a brilliant idea! I've been using 1/2 tbsp of butter and 1 tsp of coconut with a few drops of vanilla...no need for cream or sugar!! Tastes great and there's no oil film or anything.
I'm wondering if upping the coconut oil or butter will help me feeling fuller longer. I just didn't want to add the extra calories on my DD if doesn't make that much of a difference. The guy who came up with the recipe says to increase to 2-3tbsp over a few days...that seems a bit much and would be all my calories on DD. I might try it without the butter and maybe more CO (or vice versa). Any suggestions are welcome! |

Some people find they are fuller with greater amounts of the CO and butter.
MCT-boosted coffee or cocoa used to take up virtually all of my DD allowance but as I needed them for migraine management I managed with broth and shirataki noodles at other times in the day. Now the migraines are mostly under control, I don't need to take that much MCT every day, so I typically have a few more kcals for food on DD now I'm in maintenance. (If I feel a migraine-like symptom, I switch back to 2 MCT-boosted drinks a day.)

SS, I suffered migraines for 34 years. Over the years they became more frequent, more intense, and longer in duration. Toward the end I was having a migraine 2/3 of the time. I was miserable and debilitated.
The last two years of it I also had chronic bronchitis that proved untreatable. I read an article online that said gluten causes bronchial mucous. I was willing to try anything at that point and went gluten free. Within 2.5 days both the bronchitis and the migraines were gone. For a couple months I experimented. Whenever I ate gluten the migraine came right back. When I was fastidiously gluten free, I was migraine free. It's been nearly six years now and I don't get migraines anymore. I suffered needlessly for 34 years. I've found a lot of similar stories on the gluten intolerance boards. I can't resist telling every migraine sufferer I encounter. |

Me again - has anyone gotten any stomach troubles from doing this? Like queasiness, the runs? I only have one bulletproof coffee/day and only on DDs. Today is a DD and I haven't eaten or drank anything but stomach is not doing good. I've gone to the washroom 3x already and it's only 9:20am. I feel like I need to eat something carby to soak up whatever is in my stomach but that will just through me right off if I do that. I also have really low energy and just feel sick, got a headache. I'm not sure if it's something else or the extra fat.
Edit: I've also been doing low carb for the last couple of days so I'm eating higher protein and fat. I've done it before with no issue. Last edited by oceania; 01-21-2014 at 06:27 AM.. |

oceania, yes the CO can cause tummy issues until you get used to it. It's recommended to begin with a teaspoon for a couple of days and work up.
With all the threads on BPC around here, it still needs to be mentioned to get a frother to whip up the coffee. It blends the oil so there's no oil slick on top of your coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. I got mine for $20 at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Going to get another one to keep here at work. I do count the calories. On an UD, I'll use 1 tblsp. each of salted butter, HWC, and CO. Sometimes, I'll blend up an egg or two and add it in. Froth away and it's yummy, creamy goodness. On a DD, I cut it all down to 1 tsp. each. I tried adding CO to my sf hot chocolate the other day and it was ![]()
