No human research on the "skinny gene"

or any proof that ADF turns on the SIRT1 antibodies (or whatever it's called)? According to Dr. Varady (The Every Other Day Diet), Dr. Johnson's claims about the "skinny gene" are not scientific, or at least have not been proven except in "yeast, worms and rodents" (her words). She said that it's not that "fasting isn't good for you", but there's no research that's been done to prove exactly what it does (other than promote weight loss).

Your thoughts?

The studies Dr. Johnson sited were done on rodents, so she may very well be correct. I have no idea if the skinny gene has been studied in humans or not. But WE study it here, every single day, and I have FAITH in it.

Plenty of human research right here!

Ah man, just before life got busy I did a lot of research on studies published in late 2012 (and a wee bit of 2013). I believe I did find some human studies.

Dang, I have to run to be with friends in a family crisis. May vanish again for a few days. But I will go hunting for that research...it was really interesting and very thought provoking.

Better yet, research-searchers dive in and start hunting!!

When I read Dr. J's book (admittedly several years ago), I thought that he was quite clear that the 'benefits' of the SIRT1 were still entirely speculative and that the sole study on humans showed relief for asthma.

That's why I've always been amazed at the claims I read on this board. The 'science' of SIRT1 is still in its scientific infancy.

I was interested in JUDDD as a way to more easily manage my need to severely restrict calories (due to age and metabolic issues). To lose, I needed to eat <900 cal a day, and that was difficult on a daily basis, but doing 400/1400 got me to goal.

I believe I can feel a difference when I have been fasting regularly vs. after an extended break. I can't say for sure that it is SIRTs, but that I feel better when I have no less than 2 very low DDs per week.

I do enjoy that intermittent fasting keeps me in my skinny jeans until science discovers if "the skinny gene" exists or not.

Good one Babs!

I don't know if I have SIRTs running around in there or not. And honestly, I won't be heartbroken if we learn that it doesn't happen. All I know is that this WOE has been a god-send for me, and whatever it does that makes it work, I'm for it!

Ha! I like it! Skinny jeans thanks to the skinny gene!
You know, having done research back in the dark ages of my life, I'm here to tell you that sometimes we do extrapolate from rodent models. Or cell cultures. Or...
In fact, there is a new line of dog & cat food being marketed by one of the leading prescription pet food companies based almost entirely on research conducted in a petri dish. And, interestingly enough, its "skinny gene" food.
I know absolutely nothing about this gal who made the claim on Facebook (although I did see it on my feed as well) but people who have never done research and don't understand the limitations often come out and say stuff like "no human studies to prove..." Easy to say if you're not the one having to design the study!

She wrote a book about ADF, the newest one out in fact, and claims to have done more research than anyone in the field so far.

I like to think she(Varady) would know if there are human studies, but after the Ancel Keyes debacle, I would be surprised at nothing. I wish they WOULD get going on some human studies. Seems like they study everything else. Maybe we can all volunteer.

Also, she's been studying ADF for a decade. Does this mean she hasn't tested for SIRT1s? Why not?

Ultimately, my NSVs are so impressive ... my health is so much better ... my weight loss was so simple ... weight maintenance has been so easy ... my jeans are so skinny ... that I really don't care about the 'why' I remain devoted to the 'what' and 'how'.

(although the theories sure are interesting).

...Although the 'why' can be important in helping us understand all the whys about ourselves, our health, and our relationship to food.

My only research is on myself - JUDDD eating for 7 months now - eod rotations - 2-3 months in with about 8 pounds lost, my arthritic thumb (of about 8 months) no longer hurts and again has strength to pick things up and not worry about dropping them. I changed nothing else in that time - never took meds for it anyway. My thumb and I don't care about SIRTs or not - we're just happy to be back to knitting with no pain.
