Lawry's Roasted Garlic Salt.... Not what you think
My hubby bought a roasted garlic salt (with oregano & Basil), and I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked at the ingredients:
Salt, SUGAR, modified corn starch, roasted garlic, spices, etc..... This product is higher in SUGAR than the actual product advertised on the labor - garlic. And of course the 1/4tsp. Serviing size says there is no carbs. Which is obviously not true. I looked at the nutrition facts because hubby used it on green beans, and they tasted like pure sugar. He said he used maybe 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. in the entire 3 servings, and yet I could taste it clearly. I wish companies weren't so comfortable with using trickery on their products. |

Most seasoning mixes have sugar, that's very typical as sweet enhances the savory. For most of us beyond the induction phase it does no harm at all, but do count each serving as half a carb if you're being really strict. I have yet to have a seasoning salt throw me out of ketosis or cause cravings that weren't strictly psychosomatic in nature. Most of us don't cheat on seasoning salt and relish

I'm too carb sensitive to add any extras this way. It's a great reminder, because these sneaky sugars & carbs can ruin a great plan.

This is why I prefer to make my own blends. I have one chipotle spice mix that lists 0 grams of carbohydrates, but if I look closely, I can see the large, irregular sugar crystals. These aren't the superfine Dixie Crystals ones. Blaaaargh! I mean, it probably ultimately won't hurt me, but I'd prefer to get my sugars in the form of vegetables and the occasional fruit.

I find this all the time in ingredients and it's so aggravating! What's good though Jenn is that you can taste it now, if you had not read the ingredients I bet you still would have been able to point out the sugars in it by taste. That to me is a step in the right direction in your woe.

Mrs. Dash has some salt-free blends that do not contain sugars and really allow you to add a lot of flavor to dishes. I always double check seasonings before buying, because I have made the same mistake before.
Been there, done that, wearing the t-shirt.

This is the thread I've been looking for...
I just realized that the Lawry's Garlic Salt with parsley (green cap) that I've been using has sugar and the third ingredient even though the nutrition facts say 0 sugar, 0g carbs... I tried to enter the ingredients in a recipe counter and it's almost impossible to figure out but one thing I noticed was that the 10% salt that it claims to have is mostly impossible. I am thinking this had at least 3-4 carbs for 1 tablespoon. I think after fooling with the numbers that this mix is closer to 50% sugar. ![]() |

Sometimes I use seasoning mixes due to lack of time but I found a blend that is sugar free. We absolutely love the chili lime - The Gourmet Seasoning Spice Blends.

You know you're a low carber when you start sweating the miniscule amounts of sugar and carbs in some foods. It's the big things you need to worry about. Forget it.

The carbs and sugar all add up and when you don't know its there, that's a real problem. It's one here, one there and so on.
If I want sugar, I'll eat some chocolate but it has no business in my spice. What's more concerning is how they hide the amounts so that I can't even make sense of it. I've tried to dissect the ingrediants and estimate according to the 1st ingredient being the most and less as it goes down the list. Doing the math I estimate that it might be about 3-4g of sugar per table spoon, so that is about a teaspoon of sugar per tablespoon of spice. I used Mrs.Dash tonight and I don't see any sugar in it. There is also another one called Spike which I need to buy again and it is amazing but I sill have to check it for sugar too... |
