What's in a number?

All the women in the above picture are 150 pounds, and as you see, they are VERY different when it comes to their size and shape.

I'm not happy with my size, but I'll be honest - I am 190lbs - I've been here before. When I was in middle school, I stopped being active, and that 190lbs was a size 16. At 26, with an active lifestyle, and some walking/jogging, zumba, and light workouts 2-3 times a week maybe - my 190lbs is a comfortable size 12. I've been 170 lbs... yet, still a size 12!! My pants were a little lose, but that was a 20 lb difference in what I am now. Crazy right? No wonder when I lost a bunch of weight a few years ago - almost 40 lbs and I only went down one size, I was still discouraged - it was like I was torturing myself for nothing (working out 6 days a week, 1-2 hours at a time on 1000-1200 calories a day)

We torture ourselves for a magic number when we need to look in the mirror! Just look at yourself, you are beautiful! Don't let the number on the scale tell you differently.

Point is, the number on the scale does not describe you. If you have to write it down somewhere or share it, even know we are programed to identify with it, and be labeled by it, it's really not a big portion of our health story. When people look at me, they are surprised at my weight - but hey, I'm a pretty solid chick! So what!! I'm "obese" on an online chart? Maybe it should be redefined - I hardly believe, as I look on these forums, and see the amount of workouts, and daily activities, and healthy habits - I hardly think "obese" is a proper description - to me that word means unhealthy, and unwilling - we are determined and looking great!

I just wanted to say this - This little community is so inspiring! You folks are inspiring and amazing! We are in this together, and this is the only place I know I can home and vent, ask questions, and discuss things without judegment or scrutiny - most forums can be harsh, some people are so mean - not here

you guys

Great post LB! We put so much importance in that scale number, or even our clothing size. Although I came to JUDDD for weight loss, I will stay here for the health benefits as well as the weight management it offers. We ARE all putting forth a lot of effort to get healthier, and it's paying off for so many of us.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm so glad you've joined us!

And I'm 150(ish) and don't look like any of them! There's so much variety in size and shape at the same weight. It's !

I have a magic number that"d like to see on the scale, and it would be amazing if I reached it! But who knows what I'll look like? I may be proud of that number, VERY proud of myself, but I'll probably still have other goals to reach with toning and things like that. I may end up the size I want to be when I hit that number, I may not. I think the scale number is just our initial measuring stick until one day we look in the mirror and say, "I may have only lost 3 lbs, but darn these jeans are lookin' good!"

I totally agree with you there. My goal weight is 140, but I have no idea how I'll look at that weight at this age. I may need to lose another 10-15, or I may decide I'm happy right there. I can't wait to find out!

My goal has always been 150 lbs, but I've never been able to get below the mid 160s - so when I finally reach that - I hope that's it LOL!

There was a website at one time that had members post pics along with weight. It was so easy to see that 150 for 1 may be perfect and for someone else same height, but different build, it was not at all perfect. Gosh I wish I could remember the name of that site!

I don't know if it was the same sight, but I know what you are talking about.

I read a site called nerd fitness, and they have a member on there named Stacy - she lost a bunch of weight, but wasn't healthy - and actually found that after she started lifting weights and working out while eating a healthier diet that consisted of more calories - she weight more, but was actually smaller and VERY toned.

it's a pretty cool story:

this is proof of something i already knew... i am not over weight, i am under tall

great post and great message. numbers really arent everything. i have friends who are so thin with low numbers on both the scale and the clothing size.... still not happy. it's all perspective and how we actually see ourselves.

That's very interesting and completely opposite of what we're doing with ADF. I wonder if weight lifting and fasting could ever go hand in hand?

That site puts it ALL into perspective! For one, I am always way more critical of myself than others so seeing others that LOOK like me and thinking, they look good...it truly helps!

Oh yes, I remember seeing that site before. I actually think I look better (gasp) than the images that are there for my stats. I'm probably delusional.

No, I don't think you are delusional. You exercise and that goes a long way toward looking better.
