Why Is Induction So Important?

Can I still lose weight if I sort-of skip the severity of induction and eat low carb foods such as low carb fruits, nuts? Why is induction so special anyways if I am going to have to diet for weeks and weeks anyways? I have a very hard time just basically eating meat all day. I have ordered a bunch of books but they haven't arrived yet and I am anxious to get started. Thanks for answering.

it depends. if you want to lose 10 lb, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

if you are obese and/or have serious metabolic or psychological issues around food, especially if you have any symptoms of carb addiction, it GREATLY increases your chances of being successful to do AT LEAST two weeks if not a lot more of very strict induction.

Induction is a time to acclimate both your body and your mind to a new way of eating. it creates a clear divide between the old way and the new way. it gets your body going losing weight fast, which is a bit boost to your mind for sticking with something that frankly is very hard at first!

you need to get to the point where your appetite lessens and carb cravings (at least mostly) go away. the sooner the better, and induction is what does that.

Thanks ravenrose. I do have a lot more than 10 pounds to lose. This is so HARD. I have never been a big meat eater. I used to stuff myself with veggies and now I can't even do that. Trouble is I never lost any weight as I would go on and off a diet so often. In the back of my mind I also wonder if this is healthy. What does all that protein do to your kidneys? And I have been avoiding cheese for years as it is so high calorie. I believe everybody when they say how much weight they have lost and that must be the most important thing right now, as my doctor REALLY wants me to lose weight and I REALLY want to lose weight. Thanks so much for your response. I will continue another day and hopefully soon I will see the results to keep me going.

I don't think you need to be worrying about kidneys and protein so much - Atkins is primarily a high fat diet, not a high protein. Its main goal is to turn your body into processing fat (dietary and what you've stored) for fuel and stop it running off carbs (glucose). You don't need to eat that much meat - there are plenty of good fats in things like coconut oil, butter from grass-fed cows and cheese or fish. Its the fat that makes you feel satisfied and turns on the "I'm full and happy" sensation - and is essential. Plus, there are loads of veg to keep the variety. Oh, and your brain runs better on ketones than it does on sugar!

Induction is very important as its basically the trigger to burn off all the remaining glycogen in your liver and to turn on the fat burning switch. It might sound restrictive, but actually there are so many delish things you can eat - and as much as you want - that you probaly won't miss the other things that much. Its only a week or two (or however long you want really) but it does train you to recognise where hidden sugars are and by keeping the carb limit low, it stops you from building up glycogen again and running on glucose.

Plus, without the sugar from carbs fueling your insulin, you will find that hunger reduces, that low feeling in the afternoon goes and everything kinda of evens out!

Give it a try - have a look at the amazing recipes in the food porn section here, there are so many amazing ideas (here's my contribution: if you like cauliflower, I steam a whole head and have with a homemade alfredo sauce made with equal portions of double cream, butter and freshly grated parmesan) that you will have a huge variety of options to eat that you probably won't even notice induction!
