laxative question (not for squeamish)

The down side of lc for me has been constipation.
When I was heartily consuming 'healthy whole grains' I never had a problem, but lc has changed that. I even developed a hernia due, in part, from straining in the bathroom.
So it has become very important for me to have regular bowel movements with soft stool that will pass without straining.
Problem is I don't want to become laxative dependent.
I know all stimulant laxitives are habit forming, but even osmotic products such as Miralax advise against using for more than a week.
I have heard, but not validated that using fiber based products such as metamucil can also be a problem.
Milk of magnesia? Seems safe, but I"m not sure. This is an important concern for me, as it relates directly to my general health.
Any experience or references would be greatly appreciated.

Well, my experience is with opiate constipation.

I use senna or Milk of Magnesia. I prefer Milk of Magnesia. I take half a shot glass every other night to keep me regular. Too much of laxatives can cause urgency and diarrhea, but once you hit the sweet spot, that doesn't happen.

As others have said, magnesium (the supplement) can be effective. It would seem if you could get away with a mag supplement (with the advantageous side effect of this) would be a great and gentle and non habit forming benefit.

Magnesium is helpful, also making sure you have enough fat and fluids in your diet are quite important. If you are eating whole foods/ veggies you should be getting plenty of fiber. Keep in mind that whole foods take longer to digest so while your BMs might be slower or fewer that doesn't mean you are constipated. If you DO go more than a few days or are suffering actual symptoms of constipation I would actually go more towards a suppository or enema as opposed to oral stuff, but that is something to talk to your doctor about if it is needed. I know a lot of people swear by liquid mag citrate, but I find that harsh.

Try Psyllium Husk -- you can buy it in the powdered form and then you mix it with water. It works like a charm. You can find this at any pharmacy or online at the Vitamin Store and other places. I also find that if you eat 1-2 cups of dark leafy salad greens, that should help with regularity.

Also, if you are following Atkins, he mentions Flax seeds for constipation.

I second flax. of course it needs to be flax MEAL, because the seeds pretty much pass through without doing anything. I recommend a nice flax muffin or two a day.

Colace. It was recommended to me by my high risk pregnancy doctors and it helped a lot.

I would also recommend probiotics with a prebiotic.

My doctor told me to take metamucil. It's psyllium I believe. I am taking the capsules. When I take 6, 3 times a day it works great. I cant always get that in but it still works if I take 6 capsules once a day.

I think you need to ensure you're getting lots of fat. Neat coconut oil at bed time, about 1T will help for the morning, but if you ensure youre eating higher fats ( butter and cream) in the day that would also help. I often make a chia seed pudding.....soak chia seeds to gel, then mix a couple of teaspoons of them with Doyle the ammount of heavy cream and some sweetner of your choice, filling and yum! Finally water! Drink loads! And I agree with CurveControl re the wholefoods...you will be digesting more of them completely, and without grains for bulk, the amount will be less and less often.

I vote for the Colace or generic brand also. It was recommended by my Dr. also, she said it was fine to take daily as it is a softener not laxative.

I've had issues with this for quite some time, and low- carb only made it worse. A few good beers used to get me going, but that's not an option now. I was told to do whatever you can do to get it out/moving (dulcolax, etc.) and then make sure you have a maintenance routine that keeps things going.

What has been working for me is magnesium. I take 2 of the chelated ones, plus one of the cheap-o ones, morning and night. What I read was to take magnesium and keep going up in dose until you find what works for you.

Eating good veggies, drinking water, and eating fats helps, too.
