Wild Fluctuations - Would a PH Help?

Last weekend I gained 9.8 in 3 days but then turned right around and lost 7.2 on the DD following the massive gain. What causes such drastic fluctuations in weight? My weekend gains are always at least 5 pounds and I am starting to feel frustrated gaining and losing the same weight week after week (I'm in maintenance but it's still frustrating nonetheless)

Would a PH help to desensitize my body to whatever is causing the rapid weight gains every week? If so, would I do a PH every time it's a DD or would I need to do a lengthy PH for a specified number of days in a row?

I don't know the answer LIG, but I feel your frustration. If I skip a DD or 2, I go up by 4-5 lbs too. I like to take a weekend break about 1-2x a month, but that means I spend half the month trying to get it off. I think if you're in maintenance, 5-2 works better to maintain without the huge fluctuation from water gain/loss of EOD. I could be wrong, but that's my experience.

Lifeisgood, are you saying you gained 9.8 pounds in 3 up days or free days (uncounted days) in a row, or with an up day/down day/up day rotation? And normally on your weekends is one of the days a down day?

Calichris, 9.8 in 3 free days in a row. My normal schedule is 5-2 with DD's being on Monday and Thursday. This week I'm doing 4-3 because my weight is slowly creeping upwards and after my DD's last week I was still about 4 pounds higher than where I had been previously maintaining.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing this.

I think there is a reality here that if some of us have super broken metabolisms, you must take a more strict route. I can maintain on 5:2. But the only way I can lose is to do 4:30 very strictly. With any eye to my UDs as well as FDs.

Hope you have better luck with 4:30. It's so frustrating spinning in GHDWL.

I think anyone would find a 9.8 pound bounce upsetting, although it's not so uncommon after three free days in a row.

To answer your original question .... although you could always try it and see, I'm not sure that the potato hack would make that much of a difference. If you are in maintenance, and your weight is creeping up as a weekly average, it may be that 3 uncounted days in a row is not quite working for you for maintenance. But maybe someone who has done 5:2 for maintenance can speak to this better than I can. Have you been doing it long? I think your 4:3 experiment is a good idea, or other options are counting up days at least some of the time, or being careful with salt/carbs on up days (although that doesn't sound very fun ) are other ways you could try to keep the bounce down. Let us know what you decide to do! I'm always interested in what works and doesn't work as well for people in maintenance.

It might be a better idea to weigh once weekly. JUDDD is so very forgiving. Don't worry about the bounce so much, just the general trend. Or your scale may be wonky!

As I've said on other threads recently that wouldn't be an unusual bounce for me after 2 UD's ( I do 4:3), but it pretty much comes off by my second DD of the week, since upping my B vitamins though my bounce has been just 2-3 lbs and again its off by my 2nd DD of the week. Water weight gain is disconcerting though I agree. The weeks I did the PH I still gained 3.88 lbs over 2 UD's so possibly slightly less than normal, but it still took 2 days of PH again to get it off.

When I was maintaining with 5:2 my bounce was less dramatic, but certainly higher on Sunday/ Monday than Thursday. I did DDs on Monday and Wednesday. I did not eat my UD calories every UD on 5:2. I had an UD range like 1400-1700 and under 300 on DDs. My actual numbers were 1580/320. I only did the PH 1x and felt awful. I dropped weight, but it wasn't worth it to me. By the middle of the second day I felt dreadful!

I don't think I understood, Life is Good, that you were already doing 5:2...Sorry for that. I guess the only thing those of us who are trying to lose and or maintain can do is to count all days, every day and either never do free days in a row, or accept that it's going to slow us down.

I believe Dr. Johnson covers this on page 83. Paraphraised a little bit. Do not weigh but
once every 6 to 8 days or the bouncing up and down will drive you nuts. Of cource I never follow directions ......

Thank you for all the feedback. I know that my weight has increased over the past 4-5 weeks because my Friday weight, which is after my 2nd DD, has been slowly climbing My DDs are under 200 calories but I need to start tracking my UDs a little more carefully before the weight gain gets out of control. I thought maybe I was having a sensitivity to something and that a PHD would help to clear it so that I wouldn't have the massive gains. Wishful thinking

It *could* help. You could do the PH once or twice a week in order to get lower than your goal weight, and then you could eat more on UDs. In theory anyway.

I gained 11 pounds in 3 free days when I went to GA in July and I am still fighting that gain. BUT I cannot even maintain on 5:2 or 4:3. I can only maintain with EOD. That said I often do potato DD's which does help me start the downward trend again although ever so slowly. I am also in maintenance and when the upward creep starts I go back to potato DD's. I do not do the PH just cold boiled potatoes on my DD's.
I find that I can bounce up quickly if I do not get enough salt in my diet and then it is hard to get rid of the water weight since I tend to hold it. Sounds like the opposite that would happen but that is the way I have found it works for me.
Good luck on finding out what is causing the bounce.
