Tight calves?

My calves have been feeling tight throughout the day. It's a tightness, but not a feeling of being worked out too hard. It almost feels like a Charlie horse is coming on...but it never gets that bad. I take a multivitamin. Could I be missing something else?

The most common deficiencies that can cause charley horses are potassium and magnesium. You may be deficient in one, or both, of these minerals.

if you have been strictly low carbing and perspiring at all, it could be sodium deficiency. people in ketosis shed a lot of sodium that carb mouths keep.

otherwise WATER WATER WATER. for me that feeling can be a precursor to serious thigh cramps, the most painful thing I have EVER felt. they normally come on at night, for me.

This is a sign for me that my lytes are low and I need to replenish with fluid and sodium, potassium and mag. The easiest way to do that is with a cup or 2 of chicken stock.

I used to feel that too, and also get full-blown cramps at night. I started taking 500 mg. of magnesium a day, and no more cramps or crampy feelings.

6/22/13: the 100 lb. loss only lasted a few weeks, and I've since regained some of the weight. Stats updated to reflect this.

I also take potassium to keep that feeling at bay. They usually hit me at night when I'm sleeping, but as long as I take the potassium, I don't have a problem.

Agree with sodium, magnesium, and potassium.

Supplements: something salty to eat, 250-500 mg mag, a couple or 3 of the 99 mg potassium tablets

spinach, yogurt, salmon, avocado or mushroom for the potassium (there's more, but those are easy)

spinach, yogurt, avocado, or nuts for the magnesium --- Sesame Seeds (63%), Brazil Nuts (63%), Almonds (48%), Cashews (44% DV), Pine nuts (43%), Mixed Nuts (39%), and Peanuts (31%), Pecans (17%), Walnuts (16%)

salt for sodium.

I'd try supplementing with either magnesium oil or liquid ionic magnesium and maybe also potassium.

Most of us (people, not LCers) are deficient in magnesium & most forms of the supplement are not well-absorbed. Even foods that should be high in magnesium are not because the soil is so depleted.

I used to get severe night cramps and twitching or tightness during the day. After some research and a visit to the doctor, I found out I had a vitamin B deficiency. B6 I believe. B12 deficiency can also cause cramps. A Vitamin B100 Complex solved the problem.

Dehydration is the most common cause of cramps, if you are drinking plenty, then see post numbers 4 and 8 above.

Thanks for posting this question - I didn't realize how common this problem is! Like the others here, I have to take potassium for leg/calf cramps. Not every day but I know what to do when I get that feeling.
