Is frying with butter okay?

Hi, fellow LCs,

Just made fried pork spare ribs ... fried them in melted butter ... is that okay? Should I worry about saturated fat? The ribs tasted amazing ... but I don't know if they're safe to eat ...

Behlor it is very safe. You might want to add a little of other oil so you don't burn the butter. Butter is a pure fat.

I have no idea what "modified greysheeters" is so I can't really comment on whether or not butter fits in with the plan you're following - but I'd sure check with the book or boards where you get your information and see what they have to say about it.

On a low-carb plan, butter is definitely an OK fat, and saturated fats are NOT to be worried about - heck the ribs themselves are full of it! But as Essy says, butter can burn easily, so either use clarified butter or ghee (where all the milkfat solids are removed, the parts that burn, and you're left with a nice clear yellow liquid that great for frying) or use another oil that has a higher smoke point in conjuction with the butter to lessen the chance of it burning.

Butter is safe for frying except it can burn. If you would make some ghee then it won't burn. don't worry about the sat fats. Butter is our friend.

I made this post then I made the ghee. Fun yummy stuff! You do not even have to refrigerate it after you make it!
