Entering the Dark Side

OK, it's time to officially enter the dark side. I'm 52 years old, 5'2", and 178.5 pounds as of this morning. 1775/355 on the JUDDD calculator with little to no exercise, although I do walk several miles every day.

I have a very long history of dieting, since I was 16 and thought 118 was too fat. Can you imagine? Many on again, off again years of WW and other diets since that time, and several attempts at LC. For the latest go around I lost 39 pounds on WW over the past year, then spent three months on LC/VLC and lost another 1.5 pounds.

One and a half pounds in three months. Seriously? I was getting very discouraged because I love LC, both for the food itself, the way it makes me feel, and for the much improved blood glucose readings I've been getting. I'm unofficially prediabetic and trying very hard to keep it under control.

I kept seeing JUDDD in people's signatures on the main lobby of LCF and started investigating. In an earlier attempt at LC I had tried IF a couple of times but decided it was too hard, probably not all that healthy, and I gave up.

This time I started reading everything I could find. Dr. Johnson's book and reports on PubMed and the media were encouraging, but what really spurred me on were the amazing posts here on the JUDDD forum. Y'all are such a supportive and happy bunch, and so many people have reported such good results, including getting to their goals. What a difference from the main lobby! I decided I'd give JUDDD a chance. What did I have to lose, right?

I've been JUDDDing since 4/10/13 and have lost a grand total of 8 pounds!

For the first three weeks I wasn't hitting my UD numbers, either over or under and three of my DDs were too high. Then I got smart. Since I've been tracking everything in ******, I threw the following numbers into a spreadsheet: date and UD/DD, calories, morning weight, fasting BG, and daily steps, along with weekly averages for calories, weight, and FBG. I hilighted the days when I didn't hit my UD/DD numbers.

So now I could really see what I was doing. It was pretty sobering to see more than half of the days for three weeks hilighted for missing my numbers. Once I did this, I started losing.

At first I struggled with the UD number. It seemed like I had to force myself to hit it and then ended up going over, sometimes by quite a bit. It really just seemed like a *lot* of food. Then I decided to think about it this way: I aimed for 1500 to 1800 calories on UDs, with 1800 as the max. I was averaging around 1500 calories a day on ****** prior to starting JUDDD and for some reason thinking in terms of a range makes me much more comfortable. So now I manage to hit my UD number spot on most times.

Although there is the occasional dud, DDs are pretty much easy, especially since the *no appetite* effect has kicked in. It's kinda fun figuring out how to squeeze in as much good fat, moderate protein, and healthy veg as possible on a DD. Believe me, I weigh and measure everything!

Anyway, thanks for reading! I'm looking forward to participating here.

you are doing great. Keep it up!

Almost my entire family follows JUDDD. DH and I started in April of 2012. He lost 40, I lost 20. My DS14 has been following since April 2013 and he is down 20 (he does 2000/1000). My DD11 has nothing to lose, but with all of us JUDDDING, she eats more veggies than ever!

The family that JUDDDs together achieves and maintains health together. Your DS14's results show perseverance - I hope that he's appropriately pleased with his outcome to date.

I track my numbers, too, on an Excel spreadsheet. Then I use the graph function and create a line graph oh my daily weight. There is a trend function which I've activated on my graph, and it's nice - I can see a downward trend! I also track my exercise, miles on bike, and steps, and any extra supplements - plus I add comments to the date about what was unusual about that day.

Dolciani!
Glad you've found a way to make JUDDD work for you so easily.
I'm not techie enough to do spreadsheets but I log everything in a diary and, as you note, it helps to spot trends and keep me on track.
I wish you a very enjoyable and successful JUDDD journey.

Dark? Are we dark? Gee, I feel very light. Maybe there's just a different Light side.

Congratulations, dolciani. All best wishes.

Monica, what a great thing to be able to say - your family follows JUDDD.

I don't track as carefully as Bonnie, but I have a page per week for generally noting what I've eaten, with spots to fill in for water, vitamins, space to fill in workout names. I also have a page for keeping measurements that tracks those over a month and a half. Never thought of keeping a record of how close I came to calorie targets.

Hi, Dolciani. Congratulations on your eight pounds. May there be many more such successes to come!
I am staying low carb also, and really like it with JUDDD. I find my Down Days are much easier since I switched to almost all protein for my meals those days, with a little fat, and minimal (0-5) carbs.

And...in my corner of the Dark Side...there's bacon!

Thanks for the welcome, everyone! I've been out sick with a very bad cold the last week and have replaced a lot of DDs with MDs in hopes of getting better. I'm back on the rotation now and down another 1/2 pound.
