Ahhh!! Stalling...

I've stalled the last 5ish weeks. I have been staying under 20 carbs, eating leafy greens, cut out soda etc. Well going over the Dr.s low carb plan I came across something I missed before. Certain artificial sweeteners cause an insulin response. I knew that, xylitol, malitol and (this is what I didn't know) Acesulfame potassium.... Wth! That is in my protein powder!!! No wonder dur!!!

Nancy, can you please provide a source for this bolded statement? It would be invaluable to me to know how and why this is possible and also what is acesufame potassium? Thanks in advance!

From what I understood, certain artificial sweeteners can trigger an insulin response in SOME people... I thought that was completely individual though which ones, if any, do. And I thought it was more common in the extremely insulin resistant folks.

I seem to have reactions to aspartame, but nothing else.

Are you sure you're stalling? What I mean is, are you looking at anything other than the scale? I haven't lost a pound in a month, but I'm getting smaller anyway. I'm losing inches. I'm not in a stall.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't look at what your eating, and it's always good to know what foods you react to, but it's also good to remember that the scale isn't really the best way to measure success.

Clackley- it was on the paperwork for the diet the dr gave me. I have no other source. He is a bariatric and weight specialist, and he does nutritional research. Ace sulfate potassium is an artificial sweetener in basically everything. Went shopping today, it's in most protein powders, crystal light, dasani drops, Splenda diet coke, diet cherry coke.
Ntombi- I am definitely stalled, no scale or clothes size is budging.

Ill let you know how it goes after I cut these sweeteners.

If I wasnt so tired from work, I'd go look it up. According to Dr. Bernstein low carb diet, and my Dh who is type 1, it is the fillers (maltodextrin mainly) that cause a blood sugar reaction. And yes dh's bs goes up slightly if he eats something with maltodextrin, even if it lists 0 carbs. There are some other things like this, but this is the one we started focusing on removing from our diet first.
Our local walmart has little round bottles of liquid splenda which is working fine for DH and tastes fine to me.

So you are correct, in saying that if you have a disturbed insulin metabolism spoonful sweeteners will be the worst, but even the packets are bulked with maltodextrin too. It may be why in DANDR Atkins recommended limiting to two packets a day?

I am allergic to corn, and I get a bad reaction to maltodextrin, which is a corn derivative. I only use sweeteners without the maltodextrin, which means I don't use powdered sweeteners. I almost always use sweetzfree, which is liquid Splenda. No insulin response, no reaction to the chemical, and no added carbs from the maltodextrin. Win/win/win.

I also use SF syrups, and rarely other sweeteners, but never with maltodextrin. There are a lot of choices out there.
