WOE: Moderate Carb JUDDD (Lost first 4 lbs on WW)
Start Date: 7/4/2012 -- 42 lbs lost total
39 Weeks on JUDDD -- No Angst

Today I weighed in at 249 lbs for a loss of 2 lbs this week, a total of 41 lbs lost, 37 of them on JUDDD.

Well, I predicted that this week was going to be filled with angst because I had a weekend convention. I'm happy to report I was wrong. Here are the high points and the low points.

Low Points

Up Day Binging Continues. I'll let you all know when I manage to have an up day that even approaches my calorie limits. I wake up hungry on up days, but thinking it's manageable, and this is going to be the day that I get it under control. So, I make a sensible, calorie-controlled breakfast. And then it's not enough. So I eat a sensible snack. Then another less sensible snack. And next thing you know, I _snap_ and I'm slathering cream cheese on pepperoni until satiety clocks in. But it doesn't seem to clock in until about 1200 calories. And where does that leave me for the day? No where good. I'm starting to wonder if I should, instead of planning a sensible 400 calorie breakfast, actually set out to eat an 800 calorie breakfast so as to prevent the snapping point. I dunno. At a loss here.

High Points

Traveling with JUDDD. I predicted this was going to be a week of angst because I had a three day jaunt to Smith College where I was a guest speaker at ConBust. The first year I made this trip, I snacked on low carb foods on the train, convinced that I could keep to my diet, but when it came to dinner options when I arrived on campus, it was a total carb blow out. I ended up eating pizza at midnight, getting heartburn, overeating the next day, and gobbling up cheeseburgers on the train home, returning with five new pounds to show for it and a heap of self-hatred. What a difference JUDDD makes. This year I did an easy fast on the train up to Massachusetts, and skipped dinner that night in favor of interesting panels, a slim jim, and lots of tea. That busy Saturday I treated myself to belgian waffles and a lovely breakfast, skipped lunch, and went out to a Chinese buffet with fellow authors like the amazing Tamora Pierce. (Who read my book, OMG fangirl squee, and liked it so much she ordered the sequel!) Then, I fasted again on the train home. What do I have to show for it? Wonderful memories and a happy number on the scale that puts me back under the 250s.

I'm losing weight far too slowly for my tastes, but I'm losing consistently and with joy. I love JUDDD!

I'm not entirely sure what I think about the supporting science for the Leptin Reset but a keystone of the several flavours that exist is a hearty breakfast to forestall hunger pangs and reduce the need to snack. Hearty as in 35g of protein with some carbs and fat in Byron Richard's (?) version to 50-75g of protein with fat and few carbs in the Kruse version.

I still don't know what I think underpins the weight loss that some people report for the potato hack - but I still did it (28 days, finished last Saturday and am currently transitioning to a leptin reset within JUDDD) and broke a stall.

I have absolutely no idea whether a larger breakfast would work for you - I just wanted to chip in that various people who discuss leptin suggest that it's useful. And in my limited experience of eating that large a breakfast, it has well and truly continued to dampen my appetite. YMMV but my appetite was also substantially curbed during the potato hack.

Best wishes for deciding on your breakfast.

My breakfast is usually my highest calorie meal on UD's. Scrambled eggs with shredded cheese, SF marmalade, bacon, coffee with HWC. Easily 600 or more calories if I add Ezekial Bread toast. Lightest meal is dinner. Just what works for me. I also do potato DD's after my eggs for breakfast. Love those cold boiled potatoes.

So glad you had such a lovely time, and no angst!

I don't know if this appeals or not, but one option for up days is that PGX fiber. It's filling!

At one point you were drinking the Bullet Proof coffee. Do you think a cup of that on UP days would help you go a bit longer?

For some reason I have discovered I can go until about noon with just a cup of coffee and almond milk. I then eat ala JUDDD between noon and eight PM.

I'm also more in maintenance mode, but wouldn't mind losing a few more pounds.

Have been traveling and eating out quite a bit the last 2 1/2 weeks and maintained at my low weight just fine. Home tomorrow - yay!

You are losing, though, even with the higher calories, so all is not bad!

I don't snack 99% of my ud's. I choose to eat 3 meals that are higher in calories because I feel like I have more freedom and don't have to restrict my meals so much. My breakfast is usually a subway foot long bacon, egg white, and cheese flat bread sandwich with lite mayo on ud's and it is 800 calories. Lunch is usually Wendy's small chili with crackers, jr. cheeseburger(ketchup, mayo, pickle), and value fries for 830 calories. That leaves me 841 calories for dinner. I think having these bigger meals keep me from even thinking about snacking.

You did fantastic on your trip Steph! Two successful travelling DDs is a major win in my book. Very cool about Tamora Pierce (I'm ashamed to say I don't know her work) but I'll bet it was a thrill for you. As always, thanks for the great update!

Beautiful. I say, try a bigger breakfast and see how it goes. It can't hurt, and may actually help!

I agree - go for a bigger breakfast of foods you WANT! I switched from "calorie controlled" meals of 300-500 cals to 500-800 (or more) meals that satisfy. Now I often only eat 2 (big) meals a day on UD. Just not hungry in between.

Congratulations on a successful and fun trip, Steph!

The bigger breakfast makes sense. If it were me, I would stick with the higher protein and fat one with the lower carbs, as carbs most definitely increase my appetite.

It's just wonderful to read your updates; thank you so much for sharing!

I went back to LR reset breakfast this morning (Jack Kruse version of 50 gr of protein) to control binging (mostly happening on UD). It really made a difference. I ate 517 cal breakfast and I am not hungry all day. I may have some cucumber later if needed.

Oh, I am so jealous! I would love to just see her... I don't think I could actually speak to her... I would be too nervous and say something stupid.

I'm on the evil iPad so will be brief... Thought for UD control- eating window, or, 2 meals.

Often on an UD, I skip breakfast. I usually want to get a good weigh-in, so I wait a bit longer before I weigh and I miss it ... But I'll have a normal lunch, maybe a veggie snack, and a nice dinner, incl something for dessert.
I wonder if eating breakfast is messing you up - the days I do eat it, I feel deprived the rest of the day, bc I used up too many cals too early, and maybe also sparked the hunger?

Thoughts?

Same here, I am STARVING after my DD. I seem okay after my coffee and water in the morning, but when I do decide to have breakfast, I eat hearty. Makes me so happy that I don't feel deprived the rest of the day and somehow more relaxed about when I will eat next. Now I find myself occasionally just eating a late breakfast and dinner only, maybe a snack mid afternoon. I say give a generous breakfast a try. Best to you, and congrats on the 2 more pounds!!

Grumblefrosting is destined for the dictionary. Nilla I can see you adding it to your username if the scales don't move soon.

As always Steph I thank you for you oh so helpful post. I am with the others on a planned decent breakfast.

But what a triumph your trip was, both JUDDDwise and professionally.

Bye bye 50s....

I also love "grumblefrosting" and said it yesterday.

The breakfast thing is weird. I've had up days when a regular sized breakfast did not quite do it, had more, and was fine with a very light lunch or no lunch and it worked great. This week, though, I had another up day where I really overdid the breakfast calories and wound up 300 over by the end of the day. It's hard to budget up days! They are still lovely though.

Me, I am a no breakfast girl as a rule, but today I looked at DH's muesli with nonfat milk and just fancied it. So I had a very small portion. I was amazed at how filling it was and I wasn't hungry at all through the day.

Normally, if I have breakfast it will be protein, generally an egg or two, this is a left over from my LC days, and I loooove eggs.

That isn't to say I don't have toast and Marmite days, I had one just yesterday!
