Another "restarter" here...

Been up and down the low-carb road. I know it works, but I get in my own way with excuses and slip-ups. Lost almost 50 pounds on low-carb about 4 years ago and put them all back on. Restarted Monday at 242.5 and this morning am 237. Gonna try to stop lurking and actually participate on this forum as a way of keeping myself honest.

Welcome Back!

I too am a re-starter. Nothing wrong with that! Some people upon re-starters, as if they have never had a kink in their plans. I don't buy it.

The way I see it, we have seen what works and what doesn't; first hand. Life can sometimes derail weight loss plans. to all the re-starters for making the choice to come back and give it another go!

Studies have shown that there's a 95% failure rate with long term weight loss sucess for dieters, regardless of what plan is followed. An excellent book that explores this in depth is Rethinking Thin, by Gina Kolata. The book explores how new research is showing how big of an impact genetics plays a role in obesity, as well as the role of Leptin. It also follows a recent 2 year study where participants followed either Atkins or a low calorie plan. The results really surprised me (neither plan produced significant sucess for participants, not even short term), and the author brings up the question that no one else seems to be asking-is it the dieters who are continuously messing up, falling off the wagon due to mistakes on their part, not trying hard enough etc OR is it the diets that are failing us? And do our genetics stack the odds against some of us? I highly recommend this book to everyone-it's not a dieting book, but instead looks at the history of dieting over the past 200 years, the research that's been done about obesity, diets and weight loss and then draws some pretty startling conclusions. After reading it I have so much more empathy for those who struggle so hard to lose weight, and then cannot keep the weight off.

Welcome back! This is my first time trying LC but I was a yo-yo dieter before to the max, so I definitely know how frustrating it can be having to restart. Just remember, you did it before and you CAN do it again!

Welcome back!!! I too am a restarter and my story is your story. It took me a few years of trying other diets.....many other diets to realize, the only way I can lose weight and keep it off is low carb. It takes a whole new mind set and commitment to change from high carb/ low calorie to low carb. I have to tell you, it feels good not having hypoglycemia.
