Best way to get things moving down there...

I tend to get painfully constipated while low carbing. Sorry TMI... What do you all recommend to avoid this problem? I've heard that coconut oil can help, I've heard about taking magnesium. What kind of magnesium would you recommend? What other suggestions? Please help!!!

Well, you've just listed the two best solutions...

With magnesium, be careful: It's a laxative, but it's often bundled with CALCIUM, which -- like iron -- can constipate you.

My husband gets SEVERELY constipated whenever he eats too much fiber. We're talking impacted bowel, trips to the doctor (and on occasion ER), etc. Atkins means we eat a lot of fiber-rich foods (nuts, flax seed, etc., not to mention the VEGETABLES), so this has been a problem at times.

Coconut oil has been wonderful. We drink it in our morning coffee (use an immersion-blender so it comes out frothy, rather than like an oil-slick on top!). It's basically breakfast for us. The first time we did this, our bodies were craving the CO so bad, we couldn't get enough! lol Later in the day... we discovered what CO does.

Basically, I stick to 2-3 TBS in my coffee now (and maybe a fat bomb or two per day), and it keeps things nice & regular. If I notice any sort of "backup", I add more. If things seem a little TOO easy, as it were, I take less.

What form of magnesium? What are the increments?

So, you might consume 2-3 T co plus a fat bomb or two per day. That sounds like 300+ fat calories? That'd be really cutting into my calorie count for the day.

Thanks for your help.

I've been finding cooking with coconut flour works wonders in that area (I think my body is used to the coconut oil now).

I bought Nature's Way "Magnesium Complex" from Netrition and I have been taking 500 mg with dinner every night and things are moving in the morning! I was suffering from terrible constipation previously. I am now regular again!

Thanks for your help.
A couple things, here:
  • This is the Atkins Induction board. On Atkins -- and particularly Induction -- you don't count calories. I realize you are following a differnt plan. Just realize that posts here are going to be for Atkins Induction, on which it's VERY important not to limit calories.
  • Those 300+ fat calories you sound upset about? Are pretty much ALL my pre-dinner calories. The coffee fills me up till about lunch time. I may make lunch... or I may grab a fat-bomb or two. Tonight, I'm going to have a workout at 6:30 pm, which "should" be dinner time, but we won't have gone home yet... So I'll have a fat-bomb before I go (if I have time to get them made, today! -- we're out! If not I'll have some cheesecake), and have the energy to swim my 500... and THEN have a small dinner, afterwards. (I probably won't be very hungry -- I'll want water more than food.)
  • Large quantities of fat limit appetite. That's a big part of the POINT of Induction! -- to increase your fat intake, so you reap the benefits of increased metabolism and appetite suppression.

So yes, that's a lot of calories from fat. This is a GOOD thing, after all! (Go read Gary Taubes, "Why We Get Fat" if you don't understand this.)

As for magnesium, well, before I started using CO, I tried using magnesium. No one had warned me about the calcium, though, so it backfired, since my magnesium was in the form of a cal/mag/zinc supplement. It had the opposite of the intended effect. I can give no sound advice on magnesium.

1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
1/2 cup CO
1/2 cup freshly-ground PB
1 TSP salt.

Melt all together in microwave, mixing well. Pour 1/8 cup (2 TBS) into silicon molds and freeze. (My "cupcake" molds have a line on them that is at just about exactly 2 TBS, AND the spoon I use to pour it in is 2 TBS, so I "double-measure". ) Makes 1 dozen.

I take a good probiotic every day, try and to work in coconut oil for cooking and fat bombs, and magnesium with my supplements if needed. I also have a box of Smooth Move tea if I notice I haven't gone in 2+ days, it works over night and never had an issue the next day.
