Bathroom visits during night
One month into LCHF and I lost 15 pounds. Unfortuantely, I am getting up 4-5 times a night to urinate. I consume 75-80 ozs of water. Also, I wake up with a frontal headache and dry mouth. Is this normal? Thank you.

If you are from a cold climate the headache and dry mouth could be due to sinus inflammation causing you to sleep with mouth open...because of dry heat in house.
I have to stop drinking fluids unless thirsty between 6 and 7 especially if caffeinated or the same will happen to me. If I get thirsty after that time then I just sip something. Oh...if you are drinking to much water you could be causing an electrolyte imbalance...maybe this could contribute to headache also. Try drinking some broth or sugar free gatorade or powerade during the day. And of course if headaches persist see a doc.

Your electrolytes can be unbalanced from all the water. When I upped my sodium intake the headache and dry mouth went away. Try adding some salt and see if that helps. |

Why so much water? Back when I first started LC in 2000, the word on the street was that drinking huge amounts of water was super important, but I thought that had been debunked.

I drink anywhere from 64-100 ounces of water a day, plus decaf coffee, and various teas. I will get up once during the night to potty, but only if I don't stop drinking after bout 7pm. I was getting up multiple times, but my body got used to it I guess. I suggest stopping the liquids 4 hrs before bed, and see if that helps.

I drink about 60-70 ounces per day.
but I chug in the morning and afternoon. I get most of it down early. I can easily chug and don't mind doing it. stop drinking kinda early so I don't have to get up a million times during the night. got tired of that fast water is super important for the body to function at top level. I love alot of water.

I don't know. I used to drink a ton of water and now I drink water only when I'm thirsty and I don't have a cup of coffee in my hand. I haven't experienced any difference. I don't particularly think I'm right about water not being important, but I just haven't seen any reason to believe its a good idea to go out of our way to drink tons of water. OTOH, there's also no reason to think a ton of water will hurt you. But I find drinking a ton of it kinda unpleasant.

coffee is water. you are getting more water per day than you count maybe?
it is rare people overdrink. yes too much, way too much can harm you actually.

I started 1 Jan and I'm having the exact same issues. I do my work outs at night so it is hard not to drink a lot of water before bed. It is encouraging to hear that our bladders may adjust over time. Right now I'm getting up 2-3 times a night. :-(

I get up 2 times. I think I'm just shedding excess water. LC makes me pee a lot so far.

Yeah, you will pee a lot in the beginning, when your body sheds the extra water that a carb rich diet makes you hold onto. That will slow down eventually

Normally urine decreases at night - something about how it concentrates - not sure of the medical term and unless you have large amounts of fluids close to bedtime, alcohol or caffeine, or a sickness, I have to agree that getting up in the night will eventually taper off. However, mine did not at first, so I researched a little because I thought maybe I was dealing with insomnia. I started taking liquid Vitamin D in the mornings and my sleep improved drastically and I was no longer getting up to pee. 15 pounds is awesome! WTG!!!

I need to drink a lot of water because I have low blood pressure and without it I would just not be able to get out of bed and would have headaches everyday. But, I learned that all that water needs to be paired with enough salt and minerals, and the combo really does wonders for my wellbeing.
I think peeing a ton at all times is pretty standard for the beginning of LC- like other people suggested, stop drinking a few hours before bed (a few sips of water are ok) and add salt. You can add more salt to your food (which actually tastes great if you are lacking salt, I can oversalt a tomato to death and think it just tastes just right if I haven't gotten enough salt) and drink homemade broth. I would also recommend a mineral supplement or at least magnesium. |
