Hidden carbs everywhere

Had a craving for some liver, but didn't feel like cooking so went to Publix and bought some chopped liver. It was deliscious but tasted a tad sweet. So I went to the ingrediants.
cooked chicken liver - OK -
egg - OK -
Cracker meal - What the @#$%%???
"contains wheat" - why? I mean..........whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy???
OMG - How could they ruin a perfectly delightful low carb food like that?

why didn't you read the label before buying?

I read everything now because one day I was grabbing something I thought couldn't have alot of carbs, when I flipped it and read the ingredients I was amazed.

so from there I knew everything is not as it seems at a grocery

You are right. No telling what is in anything that is 'pre-packaged' and 'made by any company.'

At least now you know to look in the store before purchase. No need to spend big bucks on stuff you can't eat.

That is disappointing. I assume that I have to read the label or ask people at the restaurant or deli counter to tell me whether a food has wheat, corn, sweeteners, etc in it. I went to a local restaurant recently and learned that they add breadcrumbs to their burgers; I guess that it helps keep the meat moist ... but I'd rather eat my burger drier or rarer and wheat free.

I agree, there are hidden carbs everywhere! Reading the label is important to help avoid being surprised.

Sorry this happened to you..........honestly, I would think that the label of 'chopped liver' would indicate that is what is was. Not sure I would have read the label either.
Live and learn, huh?

It's frustrating. I'd love to find some convenient pickle slices or herring fillet that aren't swimming in HFCS.

I hear ya'....I am a notorious label reader, but I got fooled on this one.
I think two factors were at play....one, is that it wasn't a commercial product. It was prepared by the publix deli department and in a clear plastic package.
the other, well....it was chopped liver!...Y'know, liver that is chopped.
Never will I buy anything without reading the label first.
And to paraphrase Taylor Swift....not ever, ever ever ever everrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

try some ethnic stores that are importing things from other countries, they tend to not have a lot of the crap that is prevalent in america. I love getting dill pickles or cucumbers in brine from an eastern european store, their ingredients are super clean and the price is the same as US based brands.

Along the same lines....deli tuna salad is notorious for having white bread in it. It stretches the tuna and isn't really detectable.

There's a large Asian grocery store near me, but unfortunately almost everything on the shelves seems to have rice or other starches in it, and sugar or other sweeteners as one of the first 3 ingredients. I buy fresh vegetables and meats, quail eggs, shirataki noodles, seaweed snacks, and some preprepared Indian food (e.g., paneer) there, but pretty much everything else is off limits for me. I'm glad the adding sugar habit isn't so ubiquitous in Eastern European food.

Pete, I checked the label on Bubbie's kosher dills, and there's no sweetener in that (available in Minneapolis stores like Seward Co-op).

Thanks for the warning! I wouldn't have suspected that.

I wouldn't have suspected carbs in chopped liver either. Goes to show we have to check everything anymore!

I don't buy tuna salad or anything with mayo from a deli. One time I got so sick from food poisoning from chicken salad from a deli, i thought I was gonna die!

Most of my food I make myself. When we do go out, I stick to the basics! which of course is no guarantee either!

DH is GF, so have become very cautious and read labels on everything. Yes, I'm that person squinting to read the tiny ingredients list
