Stats: I eat low carb to maintain at 126ish
WOE: Atkins
Start Date: somewhere around early 2000

I was at a women's retreat this past weekend and one of the women had a workshop for us that was all about super-healthy foods. Her daughter is a diabetic, so of course they've become very aware of carbs and sugars in their diets, so got very educated and re-vamped the entire family's diet at that time 6 years ago when the diagnosis of type 1 Diabetes came in.

She knows I have been low-carbing for around 13 years now, so couldn't wait to get me to try her quinoa dish. It was awesome! She assured me that it was low carb. Once I got home and googled it, it appears that it is not. So what's the deal with quinoa? I was so excited to find something else (low carb) that I really liked, but it is too good to be true after all?

Quinoa is a grain. It has a higher level of protein than most grains, which is why some people are enthusiastic about it, and why I included in my diet when I was a vegetarian. But it's not low enough in carbs for me, so I no longer eat it (plus I'm not a vegetarian any more, so I don't need protein from grains). Per serving, quinoa appears to have about 35 net carbs. I don't know what your friend considers "low carb"; some people consider anything under 150 grams of carbs per day to be low carb.

A carb is a carb.

Quinoa isn't technically a grain, but it is a carb. Besides hard numbers, some people think they are low carb if they don't eat traditional grains and sugars, but, while that may be healthier than SAD, it's not necessarily low carb. It probably does have an impact on the Type I person's blood sugar, but certainly less than an equivalent amount of something like couscous.

Quinoa may be healthier for you than something like bread or couscous, but that doesn't make it good for you. It's kind of like the argument for filter low tar cigarettes. Yes, they are definitely better for you than regular cigarettes, but that doesn't mean you should be smoking them in the first place. Likewise with things like Quinoa. Just because it's better for you than many things doesn't mean you need to be eating it while trying to keep carbs under control.

I don't think quinoa is a bad food, but it's certainly NOT lowcarb

It's a starch and the amt of protein is not even enough for a vegetarian.

it's lower carb than white rice, which is about the only good thing you can say for it LOL

I have a friend who insists it's all protein. well, it's not, Meredith.
Often I don't come back to read threads where I've posted. If you want me to see something, please send me a private message. Thanks!

haha... a very well-published chemist I know told me that I couldn't eat chicken anymore because it's all starch. Really. *sigh* they give phds to anyone these days......

I think quinoa is a YMMV thing.

I have yet to try it, but there are people on this board who (in maintenance) eat it and don't gain or have issues with it.

I am not much of a rice eater personally, but I do like some on occassion so I bought some to have here and there (assuming I like it when I try it) to keep me on plan with something better than white rice.

Again, YMMV.
