My Knee Surgery Journey

Hello my JUDDD friends!! Well it has been quite a journey for me since I was last here; had my first knee replacement done on May 30, and the second one was done on July 9. I was home for 16 weeks, and during that time, I had a lot of problems and issues associated with the surgeries. I became anemic (after each surgery), and needed blood transfusions; I became depressed, became severly dehydrated, but most of all, the pain meds took away my appetite and I didn't want to eat too much of anything.

I literally "starved" my body without even realizing what I was doing, and didn't even see myself getting smaller since I was mostly in bed and home-bound. My husband was very concerned, fixing all kinds of my favorite dishes, but I didn't want anything, would only eat a forkful or two. My DDs got me on the scale, and we couldn't believe it; first the scale showed me going from 255 to 225, then after several more weeks, it showed me at 210; I had lost a total of 45 pounds! This was not the right way to lose, but it is gone. I went from a tight size 22 to a 14-16 and had to buy all new clothes for my return back to work (went back in mid-September).

My appetite has come back, and I'm eating much better - I did lose an additional 5 pounds, but I think that was from my moving around so much more, commuting back and forth from work, physical therapy workouts, all of that. I plan to come back to JUDDD to lose the rest of my weight, doing it the right way this time, but for now, I need to still work at just eating more.

I've missed my JUDDD BUDDDs; just so glad the surgeries are over so I can get on with what I need to do - I will be reading posts to catch up on everyone; love you all!! Val

Val! That is remarkable, and so glad you made it through!

So it's a mixed blessing-- you lost weight and got your knees fixed, but were put through the ringer (Dawn's bang-on with that one) to do it.

Glad you're back, and with on-plan eating, you'll keep losing, be healthy physically and emotionally.

again!

Im so happy that you are finally feeling better and knees are fixed and you up and running around again.. and WOW on the loss~ Some times it happens for us and we just have to be thankfull that its gone even if it was not the intent to lose it that way.. but its goin to be so much easier now on your body and recovery with the extra pesky pounds gone.. so i will Even though it was not your intent to starve those pounds off.. any way~

Hi Valerie, and back!

Sounds like you've had quite a journey. I'm glad you're feeling better, and back here with us. By the way, how do your knees feel now? I know from my mom having one knee done about 9 years ago that it's worth it, but it does take awhile to feel back to normal. Having both done close together is really something!

Good luck and glad to have you aboard!

What a time you have had you poor thing. I was expecting to read that you had gained weight through it all but at least the weight loss is a sort of bonus after all the trauma.

It is so good to have you back here and it will be great seeing you get to Onderland, which isn't very far away.

What a relief that it is all behind you now.

OMG, soooo nice to see my friends respond!! Thank you for all the congrats, hugs and well wishes, very much appreciated!!

to LoCarbGal, I still have issues with my knees each day - stiffness, soreness sometimes, and when the weather is damp or rainy, I feel worse than usual. I have several coworkers who had one knee done, and my friend had both done like me. She had them done 3 months apart (she's going on 2 years), where I only waited 5 weeks between surgeries. I definitely needed to get them done before my 16-week FMLA leave expired, and I'm thankful that I did heal up enough to be able to get back to work okay. I have been told that it takes up to a year before they will actually feel like my own. Glad to hear your mom is doing fine and enjoying her new knee!!!

Welcome back!

I am so sorry the surgeries turned into a nightmare! But I am glad the goal of improved health is gradually coming within reach.

back. I'm glad your doing better and were able to go back to work! When I had my spine fused I was out of work for 5 months with no income. I was so grateful when I could return. Even though the 50 pounds were not lost under optimal conditions it's still nice to have managed that. Much better for your knees too I would imagine!
