Do you count calories from veggies?

Hi,

I think I've noticed that some people don't count some or all calories from some or all veggies (and some fruit, I think).

Thoughts on this?

for example-- I think my large salad on DD is about 4c of romaine, which is about 25 calories.

But when I stirfry a full bag of coleslaw, I think it comes to about 120 cals or so-- which seems too big to ignore.

Just wanted to see what other folks do

I'm not counting vegetables right now. I definitely count all fruits. And, I also count starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn.

But for the most part, especially if it's green, leafy veggies like spinach or lettuce or cabbage, I don't count it.

Then again, I don't eat huge, heaping piles of veggies. I'm like you in that if I was going to eat a really big portion, I would probably count it.

I definitely have to count fruit-- I learned recently (like, yesterday) that about 50 cherries is about 200 calories! Personally, it's worth it, since they come but once a year, but no way I'm not counting that.

But, if I don't count the lettuce-- maybe I have an extra piece of laughing cow and feel that much more sated?

The cabbage thing has me a bit confused, so I'm counting it.

I count them.
I don't count coconut oil (effects people differently) or oat fiber since it's 100% fiber, same with glucomannan.

I guess if you wanted to you could subtract the calories from all the fiber you consume since they can't be used as fuel by your body in the same way as other calories.

I count every calorie that goes into my mouth, as best I can. Been doing it for years, and, you know, old dogs...

For example, today, an UD, I had half a salt water taffy (5), a large leaf of lettuce on my sandwich (1), and will have half a small tequila cake that DH brought me back from Mexico! (222) I might have less than that, but it's in there in case I don't...

Well im confused..My caloires in one cup of raw cabbage slaw say is its only 25 caloires? How can i be so far off?? .. now perhpas the whole bag was what you meant? for the 120.. that would then make sence.. I count but i dont count.. i mean.. i have always been the "eyeballer" in the bunch... I never weight any thing, i have just guessed my way up to what my number is suppsed to be.. so who knows.. It works for me..

yep, the whole bag. Mine says that 85g (about 1.5c I think, don't have one to look at) is 25 cal, and I did the math a while ago, and a whole bag is like 4x or 5x that amount, so it's 100 or 125 cal.

I guess I'll continue as I have been-- no to lettuce but yes to everything else.

Soren, I count veggies/fruits because I'm interested in the fiber of my daily meals, too, which is one of the reasons I input into an online calculator. Frankly, as I near the end of the day, I need to be able to see at a glance if I've gotten in my veggies/fruits to the point that things will "keep moving", you know? I certainly don't want my losses stalled because I neglected fiber (it's happened before).

A couple mornings a week start off with half an apple. If I neglect counting that, I'm ignoring a lot of fruit sugars and almost 80 cals.

True that it becomes complicated to enter a tossed salad into an online calculator if there are a variety of leafy greens, and I've been known to take a shortcut or two on that.

Oh, glancing at Dawn's post... ... Hmmm... .. Dawn, you really are down to smidgen-sized counting!

You are not the only eyeballer. I'm a notorious eyeballer from way back.

As for vegetables, I count them (or estimate them in my case).

NO doubt about it, fresh cherries are worth it!

Another counter here. I have noticed over time, I have to eat fewer calories on DD to keep losing. So, I carry a teaspoon measuring spoon in my purse to I know how much 'salad dressing on the side please' I ate.

I don't think you have a bad problem though.. Your *problem* has helped you melt away many pounds while some who don't have your problem are only wishing they could duplicate your results.

You actually count it all, and lose the weight. If I'm ever being a little too comfortable with myself, I look to you and your example to get my head on straight again! So I hereby say, "Thank you".

Oh boy, I am an accountant and see the humor and the error of my ways!!! I better start logging the 5 cal gum & the sugar free cough drop.

I do log my veggies, but on DD, and when it is less that 30 cals, I may not have it in the total.

I count it all, but am an "eyeballer" when it comes to veggies that are not starchy. I don't weigh/measure to the line when it comes to lettuce and such.

I count them for sure! I usually eat only veggies on DDs so yes, I count.
Now to be fair I don't weigh but each stalk of celery is about 10 calories so if I eat 3 that's 30 calories. In the past I would eat an entire cucumber so even though I didn't weigh it I counted the 50 calories that some calorie counter said it was worth. I aim for my DD to be under 200 calories to counter act the possibility of 1) Under-estimating since I don't weigh and/or 2) Sleep eating. So to be clear I count them even though I don't weigh them.
