Counting calories from fiber? Or do you subtract calories from fiber?

I was reading through some recipes online, and when calculating calories, one person mentioned she counted 2 Tbs of coconut flour as 44 calories instead of 60 listed on the label because of the dietary fiber present that the body does not absorb. Then I remember way back to my WW days of pre-2000 and I remember that in calculating WW points, I was actually able to eat more calories when food contained some fiber. Does anyone on JUDDD deduct a certain number of calories for each gram of fiber consumed?

Personally I *don't* count fiber calories.
But I don't subtract them from the label/nutritional information,
because some of them seem to have already done so.

So, to double-check,
I subtract fiber grams from total carb grams (a low-carb habit, to calculate net carbs),
add that to protein grams and multiply by 4,
then fat grams x 9 and add.

I have this same question about Metamucil or psyillium husk powder. It's 15-20 per serving, but as I understand it (could be wrong), it's not absorbed or whatever. Do I not count those calories?

No...flax seed/meal is very high in oil.
Unless you're talking about some kind of defatted fiber...
but I don't think that's commonly available.

Need to know what the net carbs are.

But assuming the label says 4g carb, 4g fiber, then it's 0 net carbs and 0 calories
(if you choose to not count fiber calories).

4g carb, 3g fiber = 1 net carb, 4 calories.

And so on.

Total carb: 5g
Dietary fiber: 3g
Soluble figer: 2g

Plain Psyllium husk powder:

Calories (per 5 gr): 15
Total Carbs: 4.5g
Dietary Fiber: 4.5g
Soluble Fiber: 1.0g

So?

nutrition labels are confusing though. theoretically in the US they have to count fiber as 4 calories per gram, while European labeling counts it as no calories. but I swear there is a difference in treatment of soluble and insoluble fiber. insoluble is often counted as no calories even on US labels. just be careful to make sure the calories are IN that total before you subtract them out.

Ok... I'm a little bit confused.

Here's my own container of coconut flour info:

Total Calories 62
Calories From Fat 15
Total Fat 1.5 g
Total Carbohydrates 9 g
Dietary Fiber 6 g
Sugars 1 g

Protein 3.5 g

Can someone walk me through this? I get that it's 9-6= 3 Net Carbs. But as far as calories matter, if I didn't want to count calories from fiber, how to I figure out the calorie count? And how do I know if the calories from fiber haven't already been removed on the label?

I'm on this insane coconut flour kick - making so much stuff I'm absolutely loving, and feel like it's all so much healthier than white flour-y garbage. I think I'm on to some awesome experiments for DD treats with small calorie counts (that actually make me feel full!), but how small the calorie counts depends on figuring out how much to count the coconut flour as.

As I said before, I just start from scratch and figure out the calories; I don't subtract anything from the stated calories.

So 3 net carbs + 3.5 protein = 6.5
6.5x4=26
26+15 fat calories=41

Oh... ok... thanks! I'm with you now. I must have been tired when I first read through what you originally wrote!

For formula people, it would look like this:

4(Net Carbs + Protein) + Calories from Fat = Total Calories

Or if Calories from Fat isn't listed, then the best estimate would be...

4(Net Carbs + Protein) + 9(Fat) = Total Calories


(...right? )
