Gluc Magic... for DDs

You've heard of JUDDD Magic... now I want to discuss Gluc Magic.

I really keep forgetting how significant a little glucomannan powder can be... until I use it again and am reminded!

Gluc powder has the power to thicken foods... from fruity purees to broths and gravies to shakes. While it is amazing to see a little powder thicken a liquid, the true *magic* is in the power of the gluc to fill one's tummy and suppress one's appetite. A true miracle for a DD!

I remember making a gluc pudding and typing about it here on LCF while I was eating it. It took me a while to eat because after a few bites, I was no longer hungry! I'm doing it again now... I had some chicken broth with miracle rice, and decided to thicken it up to a creamier soup by adding some light sour cream and gluc powder. Here I am again, taking forever to finish this 30-40 calorie snack because it is totally filling me up!

Anyone else notice the Gluc Magic on DDs?

I'm so glad to read this, I'm waiting for my gluc to arrive from Netrition...very anxious to try it! How much did you add to your soup to thicken it?

I am interested in this as a thickener... and if it fills you up also...

I followed a link yesterday that led to a Gluc Recipe area and one posting had a summary of all the links... There someone wrote you can use the capsules but I can't be sure of the ratio I think I remember it as 4 capsules = 1 tsp ????? Any ideas??

I prefer the powder and I enjoy making the 45 calorie cake with oat flour and glu powder in the microwave. It -is- filling on a down day. I'm not sure I'd eat glu on an up day, but it's a life saver on a down day.

I usually use a little Gluc in my shakes, but I can't right now. It, uh, firms things up - something I don't wanna do until my insides heal all up.

I've used the capsules in a pinch. Just open them up and dump the powder into your recipe. I'm not sure what the ratio is though. I think I used 1 - 2 capsules in something that called for 1/2 tsp., but it's been a looong time since I did that.

I finally found the thread...I clicked on gluc...powder in the first post which opened the netrition site for gluc.. powder which had a link for recipes that brought it back to the lowcarbfriends site...wow what a trip...

Another question if I may...

Does taking the gluc supplement help to curb your appetite any?

The shirataki noodles are made from/or mostly made from konjac root...
so would eating the noodles give you the same or similar benefit as taking the supplement?

I'm not a big fan of the noodles, but I don't hate them either (well maybe the smell).

I do read posts that say they made this or that with the noodles and were positively stuffed. Is it possibly from the konjac?

Any thoughts about this?

The difference, IMO, between the pills & the noodles is that the gluc in the pills will absorb water & expand once you've ingested them (same for any fiber, like psyllium).

The noodles are already "stable" and won't expand. They may fill you up just because of the bulk, and since they're calorie-free that works for some people.

yep it is interesting how things affect us. You know that wonderful muffin of yours I raved about?? I had to cut down on it because the oat fiber has the same effect on me as the gluc - only worse!

I use my powder to make noodles, and I find them very filling and versatile. I wish I could eat all the different "puddings" folks are making but I must have some sort of throat condition cause I can't make myself swallow them. I also can't eat okra innards....

But I can eat scads of shiritaki noodles. I guess the more solid texture I can handle. I'm going to try to use the powder in recipes where it's not the only thickening agent, like I heard of an oat flour cake earlier...

I use Wheybolic it is whey protein isolate. 90 calories for one scoop which has 20 grams of protein. 1 scoop has 1 gram carbs.

Oh, yeah, just remembered to tell you when you read the label it says a serving is 3 scoops. Wow, who needs 60 grams of protein in one shake? anyhoo, all the nutritional info is for 3 scoops so you have to do the math and divide by 3 if using 1 scoop.

metqa, can you post your steps for making gluc noodles?
I've tried a couple times and had no success.
But I hate spending money on anything with zero nutrition!

I may have discussed this with you before...it's been a while since I tried.

PJ - I was successfull at making the noodles and found that a very large syringe (since I have livestock) and I mean large, lets you "inject" the gluc into the boiling water and will actually end up with noodles although thicker than the ones I buy. BUT regardless of the cost it took too much of my time to do that and I gradually have stopped using the noodles except every once in awhile. I still have 6 bags left from the case I bought.

I use 1/4 teaspoon of powder, and 1/8 t of lime in a cup of water, and I whiz the water and lime up with my stick blender, then toss the gluc powder in and whiz it till it's smooth.

I use a device made for me by Fozzie, that is a caulk gun modified with a PVC tube, and a plastic die with holes in the end, and a plunger; My Noodler. I put the slurry gel into the tube, and put the die on the end and squeeze the trigger to push the gel through the holes into salted boiling water. It resembles a cookie press but industrial. I ought to photo graph it. I'll post a picture tomorrow.

wanted a Mcdonalds frappe but without the sugar, Made a cup of coffee let it cool. Put half cup of ice in my little blender added the coffee, sf chocolate syrup added sf coconut syrup and sf almond syrup gluc powder and whirled. Topped with some of that sf whipped cream in a can. It was good and thick but I couldnt finish it, Cant day it helps me with appetite though

I imagine a ricer would work very well for noodle-making?
Not that I have one of those things anymore!!! But back in my canning days...lol...

I bought pickling lime & have tried different ratios of gluc/water to make the "slurry"; but then when I tried to boil the noodles, they just dissolved...repeatedly. Maybe I got a bum batch of pickling lime?

I had that happen before. I thought I had undermeasured my glucomannan powder cause my slurry was looser than normal. I made another batch immediately and measured more carefully my lime and added a pinch more powder and the slurry was thicker and the noodles didn't dissolved that time.
