Asian Market Goodies
I went to the asian market for the first time yesterday, looking for shiritaki noodles. I found them, but discovered a whole new world of things I could incorporate into my plan, if I knew what to do with them. Fish balls, for example. I didn't even know fish had... never mind. They also have a really great price on frozen seafood.
Anyway, what kind of asian foods do you buy that have no sugar or flour? On my list so far: ponzu sauce shiritaki noodles rice vinegar without sugar

Rice noodles - my MIL is gluten intolerant and she uses these in all her soups, spaghetti, etc. Very yummy. (I especially like one that is shaped like a triangle - when it cooks, it curls into itself and makes a big, filling bite of food)

Ugh, I have such a long list of favorite goodies but without flour, rice or sugar? That's difficult!!!
Can you have soy? I get like 8 different kinds of tofu when I go to the Asian Market!!! Are you avoiding gluten or just carby-floury things? I get seitan products for my son; they are made with gluten but are mostly protein. Very high in protein, nice & chewy!!! There are a lot of "mock" duck/chicken/seafood products, both refrigerated and canned, that are delicious. I'm not vegetarian now (was for 20 years), but the tofu & seitan are nice on DDs. --Seaweed/nori snacks (come in huge pkgs, very cheap, if you like those) --Dried mushrooms --Bean curd skin --Bonito flakes Fresh produce: --Burdock root (good for the liver, very cleansing and nutritious) --More mushrooms!!! --Lemongrass I love love love their seafood! I get frozen oysters, shrimp, & (real!) crabmeat for great prices. Not sugar-free, but I like the tobiko (flying fish roe) and grilled unagi (eel). I'm not too adventurous when it comes to fish...but there are many interesting options! --Frozen chopped lemongrass is convenient for teas & soups --Sesame flour makes GREAT breading!!!

Surprise score!!!
I just grabbed a jar of pickled ginger than I bought some time ago, to put into my curried-shirataki-stir-fry (all this Asian food talk made me hungry), and it's only 5 calories/oz! I learned something today: "sushi" ginger has sugar, and is called gari; the kind I accidentally bought has no sugar, and is called beni shōga BTW--I really like the "bundles" of shirataki noodles. The texture doesn't bother me at all when I eat them like this. They look kinda cool floating around in soup (like some sort of tiny jellyfish or cuttlefish or something) and are less messy to eat.

Can you Google it? I don't know how to describe it any further than I already have.
Mostly we put it in stir-fries and curries. It's not soft like tofu, so it's not quite as versatile. But it has a firmer, chewier texture, rather like beef.

I googled it Jenny and it looks versatile and interesting. I'm always on the lookout for lower calorie proteins, and try to avoid soy. I think a trip to my local Asian market is in order.

Here is my son's favorite; it's 190 calories, 27g protein for 1/2 the package (which is about what is on the plate; very big, filling serving). There are lower-calorie seitans out there; I've seen them at health food stores. This one is fried. It can be made at home, too, if you buy wheat gluten or "seitan mix".
The package says "vegetarian tempura". The second photo is of some seitan coated with breading made from the sesame flour I mentioned earlier, and deep-fried. It reminded me of fried oysters!!! Def not good for a DD!!! ![]()
