Cane sugar or Beet Sugar, what is your opinion?

I have used both kinds of sugar for years, but I do wonder about what the difference is for our health

Dr. Robert Lustig states in his "Sugar, the Bitter Truth" video, which was later mentioned but not fully shown on 60 Minutes' "Sugar" segment, that they have the same molecule. Whether that answers the whole question or not, I can only guess.

This video from Nutritionfacts.org

The Healthiest Sweetener | NutritionFacts.org

discusses the healthiness of many sweeteners, but doesn't distinguish between beet and cane.

I believe from my college days when I took physiology and all of those science classes that the body cannot tell the difference between cane, beet sugar, or honey for that matter. It is all broken down into the same thing by our bodies. The difference is that when you choose organic you can rest assured that there were no pesticides used while growing the product.

When I was a kid we used to drive by a sugar beet factory on the way to my aunt's house. It had a stink like no other. I don't know what exactly the bad smell came from, but it can't be good.

I don't buy much sugar (maybe 5-10 lbs at holiday time and I throw away what is left the next year to restock), but I always buy organic cane sugar. It is easy because they have it at Costco.

Who knows what is in prepared products? I don't know if labeling laws require them to say "beet sugar" but I do see it sometimes when reading labels. We have a joke around our house about "evaporated cane juice" tricking dumb people- who wouldn't know that was sugar? I guess it is probably so people who avoid beet sugar will know it isn't.

Well, as far as I know, there IS a difference between evap. cane juice & processed sugar; it sure tastes different, and has a different texture and color.

I grew up using tapa de dulce--it is also known as panela, rapadura, and--in India--jaggery. It is cane juice that has been boiled down and then is poured into molds. I *very, very* rarely use sugar in my house, but when possible, I use jaggery (it tastes like brown sugar, so it doesn't work in every thing. Brown sugar is just white sugar + molasses).

It's a simple process, and I've read that evap. cane juice is made in much the same way. White sugar goes through more steps, and something called "bone char" is often involved!!!

I wouldn't go out of my way to buy beet sugar.
I don't think it's any healthier for us--especially now that I learned from b-lou that all beets are GMO!!!

GMO = genetically modified organism.

Cane sugar vs. beet sugar? If that's the only choice, then no sugar is best.

We live a city away from a beet sugar processing plant. There was a huge ruckus in the media a couple years ago here about the genetically modified beets. They almost shut down. The more you learn the less crap you add to your body generally.

Organic coconut sugar. That's my choice. 1/2 the sugar the recipe calls for in organic coconut sugar, then stevia to make up the difference in sweetness. I just taste it till it's where I want it.

No blood sugar spikes with this combo.
