Restaurant Problem...??

Tonight I am going out with some friends to an Italian restaurant I've never been to before. The problem is its a local eatery so no nutritional facts to look up. I will have no idea how many calories I'm eating etc. Its an UD and I have 1920 calories to spread through out the day. Should I skip breakfast and lunch so that I can make sure I don't go over my calories or try to guess what would be the lowest calorie option?

I've been really good about not going too much over or under on calories and I think that has been the secret to my success.

What do you guys do in this scenario?

This is their menu which looks like pretty standard Italian fare so VERY calorific I'm sure.

I would try to decide in advance what I was having and look up a bunch of differents items on *** and get an average of them and just go with that and plan my day around that assumed calories

I agree! If you go with lasagna or primavera, you can get a pretty close idea by looking at the nutritional facts for Olive Garden or Carino's.

Also, marinara is going to be much lower than la vodka sauce. Much safer choice.

Start Date: JUDDD 1/1/12 + LCHF 12/1/13 (controlling diabetes)
Usually, I am very careful to count calories. But, for very special and unusual events, I eat lightly during the day then order whatever I want at the main event. I don't worry about the calories, but I do try to eat half (and if I really enjoyed it, bring the other half home).

So far, it has taken one DD to erase all signs of the special event. Actually, sometimes that plan does not even lead me to a bounce.

I do think you should fast only if you are used to fasting already - otherwise fasting in preparation for a big event tends to backfire into gobble-gobble-gobble.

Agree with Nancy - don't try fasting up until dinner unless you know you won't go hog wild when it comes time to eat. I'd eat something low cal but filling (big salad, cream of wheat, etc) for lunch.

Then....enjoy the time with friends and good food!

I agree with others - eating lightly during the day should give enough calories for you to enjoy what you want. Also many Italian restaurants will do a "half portion" of their pastas...especially since portions are usually huge anyway.

The only thing that I might avoid, in the sense of going way over calories, is the home-made bread with "dipping oil" they feature on their menu. I would have a hard time figuring out how much oil I actually ate and it's very high in calories....but that's just my 0.02 cents!

Great ideas. I think I'll try to get the eggplant parmigiana and a salad which by sheer guessing and comparing to olive garden should come out to around 1000 or so. I'm going to count 1300 just to be on the safe side though and avoid the bread (Mmmm...) That still leaves me 625 calories for breakfast and lunch which is darn near decadant compared to 350

Hopefully they don't load their food down with too much oil but I'm just going to take my chances and enjoy.

Eggplant parmigiana is my favorite thing to get when I go to Italian restaurants!!!

If you get the dinner it usually comes with pasta. My local place will substitute steamed broccoli or spinach for the pasta.

I skip the pasta and have a little bit of garlic bread!

OTOH, they have steak...and salmon...and some low-carb options that would be less calories since they come without pasta.

If you look at the bottom of the menu, you'll notice they also have a low-carb option for some of their dishes. The Chicken Marsala, the Lemon Chicken Scaloppine, and the Steak Oscar look really good.

Yes! Whatever you do stay away from vodka sauce (and alfredo) - I had a major snafu with vodka sauce a few weeks ago. YIKES!
