well bad weekend

I was bit by a brown recluse spider yesterday....not fun. Nothing can really be done except wait and see if it rots my leg off! The bite is slowly changing....but I can't tell yet if I'm going to react to it.....I'll try to upload pics.

So anyway.....yesterday was supposed to be a DD, and I ate, probably from stress more than from hunger. The antibiotics they gave me (augmentin) you are supposed to eat before taking.....and on DD's I usually just have coffee and a shake.

How horrible.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Let us know how this nightmare goes.

And, don't stress your body or nerves too much! If you need energy to fight for health, dive over to maintenance levels (or whatever makes you feel better).

That's honestly one of my biggest fears. I sure hope you heal quickly and won't need any treatment other than antibiotics. Absolutely don't worry about being very strict with your calories right now, unless you feel able to do so. Your immediate health is more pressing, and you can always tighten the reins again when you're better.

So sorry you are dealing with this. Praying for a complete, quick recovery.

Def let yourself eat a bit more while you heal. You don't need to add more stress while your body is dealing with the bite.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I have to remind myself to be more careful right now, too. Not only are spiders a scary problem, but we're having a big year for copperheads and rattlesnakes around here. We've had a wet spring after a really hot, dry summer last year. I no longer go outside after dark to feed my dogs.

I hope you heal quickly and that there is no lasting damage. I agree that you should just take care of your health right now, do the best you can with your calories, and not stress about it. JUDDD is very forgiving, and you can get back on the wagon at any time. Hugs!

I'm SO glad you're on antibiotics. I hope you feel better soon and I'd agree with going to maintenance. Stress will only inhibit your ability to heal and you do NOT need that!

I had a friend who was bitten by a brown recluse and she refused antibiotics. I was quite upset by that choice, but did get her to at least do clay poultices a few times a day to help draw the venom out. She was fine, but I was a nervous nellie. It did reinforce my love affair with clay though!

Feel better!

Wow, I am sorry to hear about this! I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Someone beat me to the clay poultice recommendation! I've used bentonite clay for allergic reactions on skin, including poison ivy; it's miraculous. I know a b.r. spider bite is a million times worse, but it still might help.

Also, activated charcoal. I was camping at a festival and a girl next to me got bitten by something...not sure what, but we thought maybe a spider & she was in pain. While she was waiting for someone to come pick her up, I took one charcoal capsule (was taking it at the time for GERD, happened to have it in my purse) and made a paste, put it on the bite...half an hour later the girl had cancelled her ride and was dancing and hula-hooping!

OMG those things, when they bite, can be just awful! The janitor where I taught school in Gal;veston got bitten by one and his arm reallly did swell up. He said it felt like a sledge hammer came down on his arm when the thing fell on his arm, out of nowhere, in the student restroom at school.

I almost stepped on one barefoot a year or so ago. Had I not turned the light on in that bathroom before stepping into the room, I would have. It was right in the doorway. I had carried a basket in out of my garage and set it on the floor in that room the night before and he rode into the house inside, unbeknownst to me. Had nearly a 2" leg span, he did.

Do take care. Though the reaction can vary from person to person, it usually causes major swelling and some discoloration. Those things are real bad here in Central and South Texas.

I hope you will not be irritated by more home remedies...

From what I am reading, conventional medicine does nothing to counteract the venom, only antibiotics for the wound.

Poultices may help draw out the venom. Aside from the clay & charcoal (which may also be taken internally if you are feeling nauseated), I have read about
--raw potato slices
--raw cabbage
--tea bags ("used")
--bread (moistened with warm water)
--turmeric & olive oil
--baking soda
--salt/epsom salt
--plantain leaves

Also, steroids injected near/under the bite. Veterinarians seem to be more familiar with this than people doctors, but, *Horsetrainer* (), perhaps you know someone who can vouch for this method & would help convince your doctor, if need be.

In my area, doctors always prescribe steroids for BR spider bites. But they are oral mostly. Course they make you eat like a horse. DH went through that with a bite. Maybe that is because BR bites are really pretty common in central Texas.

Seconding (thirding, ninety-fifthing) the wishes for health and a quick and painless recovery.

I was bitten by a brown recluse, my doctor confirmed it, fortunately I did not have a bad reaction like you hear about sometimes. It did take a long time to heal fully. One word of advice. Do NOT google this. It won't be helpful for your state of mind.

those things are rotten! I feel your pain. Take care of yourself.
We have glue traps down on floors in our lower level everywhere, under furniture, behind the washer and dryer, under hubby's workbench, and behind doors where they would crawl along. Threw out one trap the other day that was covered in the nasties.
We also spider nerve bomb the house every year. Used to do it in our crawl space at our old house, really kept them down.

Good Heavens!!!!! This is so scary. I hope and pray that you heal from this quickly and don't have to fight through any problems. Glad you are on the antibiotic immediately.

I sure wouldn't worry about going over on Down Day calories in order to have food in your tummy to accompany your doses of Augmentin. Just don't worry about that at all and concentrate on doing whatever you have to in order to feel better and heal.

So sorry you are going through this.

I'm so sorry for you. At this point it's too late for a poultice. I would reccomend putting some tea tree essential on it perhaps with some lavender essential oil. The tea tree is antibacterial and the lavender is soothing. If it itches you, peppermint essential oil will take it away very quickly. I myself am terrified of spiders. My sister was bitten once by a brown recluse and it turned out fine, not all the horror stories are true! I hope you feel better soon.

Are you sure? People were discussing changing their poultices frequently (30 minutes/2 hours) and keeping them on overnight for several days. In many cases, the bite area "breaks open" and suppurates (this happened to a friend of mine last year; he was cutting down a tree when he was bitten); it seems a poultice would be soothing during this stage, and possibly reduce infection.

Renee, I hope you can give us an update soon, and that you're doing well!
I also hope JUDDD has your immune system fully cranked and protecting you!!!!
