high salt foods and wt gain

If we eat at our calorie limit but eat high amount of salt that day , do we gain water weight from the high salt even though we remained at our calorie limit?

Just wondering because I love chinese foods and I know of several low calorie dishes but they are also high in salt!

I know for me, salt affects me and makes me hold on to water. But, it's only water.

Usually if I eat Chinese food or is I fall into a big bowl of potato chips or have movie popcorn the scale will go up at least 3 pounds the next day. I can count on it! Then it takes up to 3 days to see it come back off. Sometimes two days if I'm really good about drinking lots of green tea and lots and lots of water.

I did Google "foods that act as diuretics" and got a pleasant surprise.

Oatmeal, asparagus, oregano, parsely...these are just some of the foods that are diuretics and will help your body let go of that extra water.

You just have to experiment. If, like me, you eat popcorn at the movies and the scale jumps way up, then you will know! Then learn how to get it back off and remember it's just fluid retention. It's not fat.

Have to tell you I had stayed away from oatmeal even though I love it because my brain was so used to LC and I was afraid to trigger cravings.

I had made this awesome crock pot oatmeal recipe for DH using steal cut oats and 12 grain Stone Buhr.

When I read about oatmeal being a natural diuretic, I scooped up a big ole bowl and enjoyed it tremendously! Started feeling the effects almost immediately and started pee-ing like mad. Niagra Falls! It really works. And since it was such a high fiber recipe, the rest of it cleaned out the intestines and I saw a big drop on the scale the next day.

Keep lots of the diuretic foods on hand for when you do end up eating salty stuff. It really helps!

Thanks Yam yam, never heard of oatmeal being a diuretic! My favorite is coconut water, its very high in potassium and low in cal. About 5oomg of potasium for about 50 cal! We need about 4500mg a day and most people don't nearly get enough.

Interesting on the oatmeal. I can't eat it though because it messes with my digestion something awful.

Lemon in my water usually does the trick for me when I'm retaining.

Yes, salty foods does that to me (see my stats for today after pickles and Mexican food last night 137.2 after a DD) but I know it's going to be off in no time with my next good DD!

I haven't noticed this connection between sodium and bounces the next day. Maybe I'm not paying attention.

OMG once I ate so much popcorn at the movies that I was busting out of my pants by the end of the flick due to water retention! I don't even want to think about how much sodium I ate that day...

I don't have huge bounces from sodium. Or maybe it's because I'm a salt-aholic and I have equally high amounts each day that it just never goes down.

Too much sodium is my worst enemy! I've learned my limits the hard way!

I've always craved salty, crunchy foods even more than sweets, and when I overdo the salt, I can put on as much as 3-4 lbs.

Because I have a seizure disorder, too much sodium affects me negatively, so I try to be cautious, but there are those times when I'm simply too tempted.

I do eat a lot of asparagus, cukes, brussels sprouts and include ACV in my diet when I remember to take it. I do put it in my veggie soups, though.

I do try and stay away from carbs when I'm bloated, because the combo of high sodium and carbs doesn't mix well with me.

Oh, and I pay attention to my potassium levels. Too much----bad; too little---not good!

I tracked this for a while out of curiosity, and I found that for me, to see jumps on the scale from water retention due to sodium, I generally have to have over 4000mg of sodium in a day which is pretty high and I don't usually get up that high even if I have high sodium deli meat, sausages, pickles and cheese and use a ton of salt on my food all in one day. I do drink insane amounts of water though, and also take an electrolyte packet a few times a week for balance. I don't know if that has any effect on it, or if my body is just less sensitive to sodium.

I have been craving salt which is strange for me. I have been putting salt in my lemon water. It has not caused me to retain water which surprised me. BUT I did discover that I retain water bigtime with a couple of foods. I gained 4 pounds last UD and dropped 4 pounds last DD. (drinking salt added water) Sooooo I am eliminating those foods from my diet and will continue adding salt to my lemon water.
