A Grocery Shocker
I went to my Kroger today to buy some odds and ends to go with my cottage cheese. I used to get the Dole fruit in the produce case. Fresh, in water, no added sugar. There wasn't any so I went to the canned fruit aisle and found the fruit cups with pears and some Kroger brand apricots with Splenda added. So looking for he peaches I found some Dole peaches in water and grabbed a jar and thought--"Let me make sure there is nothing added". Then I spotted THIS--PRODUCT OF CHINA. Really? Seriously? Peaches from CHINA???? Then I started looking on all the fruit labels. That was the only one that actually said PRODUCT OF CHINA but they rest of them just said "distributed by...".
Now I understand why dried apricots come from Turkey *year round high-yield product, blah, blah, trade agreement blah, blah*, but I always buy California apricots if I can find them (less sulpher added). Same with almonds. And a few years ago I made a conscious effort to NOT buy fish or other food products from China sold at Costco and Sam's and I think Costco has all but stopped carrying the China *food* products. But peaches? Peaches are grown all over this country. And now, how do I know all/most canned fruit isn't from China? And before you say "Buy fresh mamasooze", I generally do, but we live in hurricane country and I need to stock up on nutritious canned goods should we be without electricity for any given time. Also need the convenience of the little portioned ones for the g-kids when they are around. Now I'm nervous about the applesauce. Read those labels people. Your life may depend on it ![]() |
