How to make crockpot oatmeal?

So, I've heard that you can make steel cut oatmeal in a crock pot overnight.

Anyone ever do it?

If so, could you tell me the ratio of oats to water?

And, I assume the setting would be "low". How many hours do I let it cook?

TIA

Awesome! Thank you! I'm off to mix it up. This is gonna be so great for tomorrow. DH has to leave really early (it's almost 8:30 here, he will be gone about 6:30).

I don't want to get up and make him breakfast!

I bought steel cut oats but had not used them yet. So, I can sleep in, DH can eat healthy, hot oatmeal. All is good with the world!

I've thought about doing this, but it never seems to appeal. I can only eat it on an UD which means I'd have to put it in to cook on a DD and smell all that yummy deliciousness all night! Let me know if it's worth it.

Thanks

They are one of those products that they sell every now and then. They are by Millville, just like the regular oats, but they come in a much smaller carton and it is white with a dark brown lid. I found mine in the section where they put the unrelated food items, such as the seasonal goodies.
HTH.

When I did it, I just did oats with the requisite amount of water, stirred in some cut up apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and set it on low. My husband doesn't do the cream thing (I don't know why), but I'd probably add that to my individual serving. I added sugar the next morning to taste. It stored well in the fridge.

Have you tried whole oat groats?? They are just the whole oats. The first ones I got the directions said to use 1 C groats and 4 cups water. Bring to a boil. Put a lid on the pan and turn off the heat. Go to bed. In the morning the groats are ready. I then put one serving in my bowl and the rest in the frig. I just odered some from Netrition since the 20 pound bag I bought from Bob's Red Mill finally got used up and I can't find them locally. Shipping has gone up drastically so ordering a 20 # bag wasn't sometthing I wanted to do again.
Love oat groats.

Alton Brown on Food Network has a yummy sounding one. Go to the website and search for crockpot oatmeal, or whatever, and it should come up. Warning; his has cream...

I do the Alton one, where you brown the oats in butter first, then put in the crock pot. I don't use milk or cream, just water. I add half/half to mine, Splenda Brown sugar and cinnamon. Yummy!!!

Once you have the steel cut oats it kinda' ruins you for "regular" oatmeal. At least it did that for me.

For a DD I'd skip the butter part, the plain oats in water cook down and get creamy. Also yummy w/ SF maple syrup in it!!

I grew up disliking the texture of 'regular' oatmeal. If I had to eat it, I had to force it down. Then I discovered steel cut oatmeal and the sun began to shine. I bet I will like groats even more! I am definitely going to get those.

Thanks for all the great advice!

I am so making this!!! I just bought steel cut oats and i had some for breakfast this morning. I just made a quarter cup of oats with 1 cup water and cooked it for awhile on low on the stove. Once it was done it made a lot. I ate 1/4 cup cooked with 1/4 cup cottage cheese mixed in and it was really good but still kinda tough. Im gonna try this!!! But 1/4 cup cooked is only like 50 calories!!! And then added with 1/4 cup cottage cheese its less than 100 calories for the bowl. And so filling!!!

Then you will probably LOVE oat groats. I can't tolerate the pasty texture of regular oatmeal after having groats and even though I have tried the steel cut oats, there is just no comparison to oat groats. The groats spoiled me for anything else. Kind of crunchy but not is the best way I can describe them. Mine arrive today from netrition and I will have them for my Saturday morning UD. Can't wait. Thank goodness for online shopping since I live in a rural area. Price of gasoline is higher than shipping these days.

I receive emails from Cooks Country with info on taste tests, recipes, etc. Today they had the results of taste tests on Steel Cut Oats. Bob's Red Mill was the winner. I think I'm going to have to buy some.
