Why Coconut Oil in Coffee?

The Let's Talk Coffee thread made me think about a question I have been wanting to ask you.....why do you or should you put coconut oil in your coffee. Over the years, I have read a couple threads on the topic but have forgot. I have a jar but have not used it in my coffee. I vaguely remember that one girl posted that she got off of a stall when she started using coconut oil. Please advise!

I put it in my coffee to give myself some additional fat and because it helps me feel full for a while. Plus I like the taste.

The extra virgin coconut oil sure tastes good. I've never tried it in coffee but I may just do that. Didn't I read somewhere that coconut oil helps control appetite? I wonder if that's just because it's a fat and therefore satiating or if there's something special about coconut oil....

I definitely remember reading (Primal Blueprint) that coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids which are very healthful and hard to find.

I have a number of reasons.

Added fat
Aids in satiety
It tastes good
Personally I believe in the health benefits of VCO so I try to get it in my 3 TBS a day. I stopped for a while but I recently started again.

By the way, as far as tastes go - I love coconut oil but much prefer Cocoa Butter in my coffee. Sooo good.

It helps my digestion; its how I prevent constipation. I also like to increase my fat/protein ratio with fats I enjoy, and coconut oil is one I like. Its easy to consume it in coffee.

I put it in my coffee because its a good way for me to get it in my diet. It makes my skin much softer and less dry. I had to stop coffee a few back and therefore didn't get my coconut oil. My skin was so dry itchy! I absolutely believe it works better from the inside out!

Hi Kathy

Coconut oil is a med chain fat. That makes it easy for our body to absorb it. Our brain is I think 85% fat, right? Fat is fuel, right? Feed the brain to keep it healthy.

I consume at least 6 tables a day!
Been doing it since 2006
It has helped my memory
It is great for the skin, hair, put on at least an hour before sun exposure will help PREVENT sunburn.
I put it on the pads of my doggies feet
Makes the best scrambled eggs I ever ate!
Makes great zero, almost, chocolate candy!

Coffee and CO go together like peas and carrots. Throw in some HWC and you have a meal!

I am sure I have just touched on the many ways CO is our friend!

It does make an oil slick on top of your coffee but think of it as a lip conditioning treatment lol...It tastes great, at least the good virgin kind does...and it helps me get my good fats in and feel fuller...I have also read it is good for brain function and there are some suggestions that it may helpful in preventing the progression of Alzheimer disease symptoms.

I totally believe this to be true

A word of caution....Take care not to take too big of a drink of it. It can choke you. I like to stir it while I am drinking it....

I don't drink coffee, but try to get in at least 2Tbsp a day. In addition to eating it:

1. I put about 1 TBSP in my mouth before I get in the shower and "pull" it back and forth through my teeth for approx. 5 minutes. I have a lot of inflammation that shows up as severe sensitivity on my gums (and hives on my skin) and this seems to help. Google "oil pulling' and there is a ton of information on this. Unfortunately, I often forget that I am supposed to be pulling and just swallow because it is SO yummy!.

2. I massage on the bottoms of my feet before I get in the shower. Someone on Dr. Oz (I don't normally like him, but this was a day on alternative options) said that putting it on your feet before a shower is a good way to "pull heat" out of your body. My inflammation problems also show up as hives which eastern medicine often refers to as "heat.

3. I put some on my arms before a shower. I have KP (bumps on my arms) and coconut oil seems to help it stay away.

LOVE CO!!

All of the above, and it is yummy. Was just thinking, I need to take it with me for my future vacation. Coffee without it now is boring.

My hubby does the same thing! Offered him a taste, secretly glad he turned it down.....it is all mine

Watch on the feet....slippery!

I love about a tablespoon in my coffee.
I make coconut bark...yum!
I also "oil pull" with it.
I rub in on my skin after showering...I love the way it moisturizes! Gets rid of the dry, itchy "winter" skin.

Eat it by the spoonful for detox and healthy innards.
Take it with me on vacations and pop some before every meal (six day cruise, no weight gain).
Oil-pull daily (pink gums, white teeth, no more nasty, infected, sore spots between molars).
Put it on cuts and bug bites.
Use it as a night- and hand-cream.
Combine it with Castor oil as a pre-shower cleansing 'mask'.
Put it on my feet.
Put it on my face under my regular skin cream.
Use it as a make-up remover.
Cook with it. (Cod sauted in VCO is amazing!)
Whip it with HWC to make a coconut dessert.

Hmmm. About the only thing I have not done is put it in my coffee.

I did because it was absolutely yummy! Until I had an acid reflux or gallbladder attack and said goodbye coffee because it was a trigger. Even the Atkins Caramel Cafe shake did it to me, but I LOVED the coffee with HWC and Coconut oil!

I have to get the cocconut oil from Netrition because the jar that I got from my local grocery store doesn't even smell like coconuts-it is very thick also. I am ordering it tonight!!! Thank you for all of the information-very useful to me!! I am back on plan after a couple months of a free for all due to excessive stress and illness. Let's just say it was two "up months" instead of an "up day" LOL I feel like I want to relearn everything that I am not so knowledgeable about. I'm looking for things that will help me get started again and keep me on plan. I thank all of you for posting-it is wonderful help!!

I'd go shopping with anyone who wouldn't run away and hide in embarrassment when I make squeeling noises in the dressing room cuz my jeans FIT or who will tell me "it's just water bloat" when they don't and bring me tissues.

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is thermogenic. That means one of the benefits is that it heats up your body, speeds the metabolism and helps burn more calories faster.

It cannot be stored in your body as fat. It goes immediately to the liver, is processed and sends much needed nutrients to the brain so it gives you more energy and makes you feel cognitively alert. It increases blood flow so that more nutrients are able to be absorbed into your cells.

Here is how I like it:

Heat up big mug of water in microwave (note do NOT heat coconut oil in microwave because it messes up the health benefits; I have read this several times).

In the hot water, dissolve a heaping, rounded teaspoon of EV coconut oil. (appx 35 calories)
Add one packet of Nestle's sugar free, fat free hot chocolate mix (20 calories; 4 carbs)
Add one heaping teaspoon sugar free cappuccino mix. (about 1 carb, something like 40 calories?)
Whisk with small wire whisk or a fork. Enjoy!

Really suppresses my appetite big time.

I use it in my coffee because it's the easiest way to eat it. I don't like it by the spoonful, and I only like cooking with it for certain things like stirfries, curries, and jerks. I don't like it in more traditional American-style food like steaks or eggs because it does have a distinctive smell that I don't dislike... I just don't expect it in some foods.

I've just started using it, but I bought the non-virgin kind because it has less of a coconut taste. It's expeller-pressed, if that makes a difference. Is the regular kind of CO as good as the VCO?

One more thing to add: I always take my daily vitamins right after I drink the EVCO chocolate drink. I believe my body absorbs the vitamins and minerals much better that way.

Not sure about that. Maybe you could google it and do some research. I have always read and heard that Extra Virgin is best.

Thanks for the information also-speeds up the metabolism GREAT NEWS! This sounds delicious and I will try it when my EVCO arrives!!!
