Fruits Carbs

Just looked at fruits and how many Carbs they have i cant believe it unless I'm reading it wrong

1 large orange 21 Carbs
1 large apple 30 Carbs

Even 100g of Blueberries is 15 Carbs



So one of the top two fruits and your already used you carbs wow

The berry family of fruits are fewer carbs. Check strawberries for an example.

yeah 100g of strawberries are 7.68 and Blackberries are 9.61 which is still a bit 20 Carbs daily don't allow for much fruit.

I always thought blueberries and all berries were far lower and could be eaten quite a bit.

In the low carb game, I am not sure there IS a carby food that can be eaten quite a bit I think that berries can be eaten by many with success while losing, but you must measure them because it is easy to underestimate.

I was always glad that berries were OK on low carb....they have always been my favorite fruits!

Ya, I had to give up my daily treat of an apple a day for now. Sticking to lc veggies for fiber and the crunch factor.

If I'm doing long runs or heavy workout days, I'll treat myself to 1/2 banana or orange. But mostly just get potassium from PowerAde Zero.

Fruit has a lot of sugar and therefore is not the 'health' food it has been touted as. Much better than apples and oranges are things like avocado, tomato or a few berries.

Berries have quite a bit of fiber compared to other fruits and lower sugar.

This is definitely a ymmv thing. An apple will curb my hunger and satisfy my hunger for hours and cut any cravings I may have for something sweeter or starchy....Berries though lower in carbs will make me hungry and so far strawberries have been the only food that induces cravings.

Even though apples are a higher carb food, eating them helped me lose weight because of many other benefits...including helping me stick to this woe.

There are many factors involved when losing weight and eating this woe permanently. Carbs and fruit is a portion of the whole picture.

I added fruit after induction as I moved up the carb ladder. It's one of those things you add cautiously, and in small amounts to see how your body reacts. I stick mostly with melon and berries, and eat it with some sort of protein ( greek yogurt or cottage cheese). I am doing protein power now, which in phase 1 keeps carbs to 30-40 a day.

50 blue berries are 8 net carbs, so 12 which is about all that is needed for good flavor and color is only 2 net carbs... since I only add a few to recipes for muffins, shakes or yogurt They hardly add up at all and taste oh so good.

yeah, remember the slogan that fruits are nature's candy bars!

you can get great fruit flavor using extracts, flavorings, and sugar free syrups if you really have the craving. fruits are definitely a special occasion thing, not a core part of a healthy low carb diet.

I know some people can tolerate them fine, but I am talking about those of us who really NEED low carb, not medium carb.

Well, it's not called "forbidden fruit" for nothing! I almost don't remember the last time I tasted an orange, but that's OK. I don't miss the sugar highs/lows that come with eating fruit either.

Like the others have said, berries are good but should be added later and in small amounts. If you want fruit now go for an avocado. It's only 5gms for a whole medium one!

You'll get more potassium from an avocado than from a banana.

I barely ate any berries the first few weeks because I have a problem with self control, but I *love* oranges and absolutely went berzerk last week when my officemate was eating one. So, I ate 1/2 med. orange and kept my carbs very low that day. Out of everything, I definitely miss oranges the most.

this breaks down to 8 net carbs for 50 blueberries and if I do the math correctly that would mean 25 berries is 4 carbs and 12 is 2carbs.

I usually add the 12 to yogurt or one minute muffin...good luck.

Fruit isn't what it used to be. It's more sugary than ever thanks to selective breeding.

But it has never been a weight loss food.

And juice is even worse.

Just think of this.

In nature, when do the fruit and grains ripen? Right before the starvation season (winter in the temperate/arctic zones and the dry season in the tropics). This enables the animals to put on fat stores to last them through the starvation season.

But humans in industrialized countries no longer have a starvation season so we don't need the fat stores anymore.

Berries and melons are much better.

10 raspberries is 2.3 carbs. Put one on each finger and eat.

Also plums and apricots are very low in carbs as long as you only eat one. I sometimes have fruit after a meal and savour my one serving very slowly.

Never been much of a fruit eater. Too many sour apples, plums, peaches etc. so giving up fruit was no biggie for me. I'd rather eat an avocado anytime. Having said that, I do like Honeycrisp apples and eat 1/2 every other day while in peak season-September thru November. After that they have no taste. Did not bother my weight loss or cravings at all. Ate with sun butter early in the day. Also use 1/2 organic banana (about 3oz) and avocado for smoothies from time to time. It's a texture and mouth-feel thing

Wanted to comment also on the Avo for potassium... I've been eating one after my walk (yes, an entire Avo.. small but still and entire one) instead of taking potassium. They really do the trick. I was having problems with electrolyte loss before.

I do eat a piece/serving of fruit (right now a green apple or a ruby red grapefruit or berry serving) every other day with almonds for my afternoon snack. I am still staying under 40 carbs daily and it's not a problem staying in ketosis.
