Symptoms of Carb/Sugar Withdrawal..

What symptoms do/did you have?

I am half way thru day three of lowering my carbs (not even down to induction levels yet - approx 50 -60 carbs / day right now) and I am having the usual experiences I have had before.. headache, zero energy, sinus pain (always get this from some reason) but I have discovered another thing that I just realized I have experienced before... dizziness. It's happened in the past I just only now tied it to being what I think is another withdrawal symptom.

Just every now and then.. a bit light headed with a touch of dizziness.

What were your withdrawal (carb detox!) symptoms?

Funny enough, I get no negative symptoms. My heartburn is gone instantly, that is the most noticeable difference.

I think the one I noticed most when I first started was I had very little patience and was really irritable.

This is my fourth day. I had a headache since yesterday it is a dull headache. I figured it was withdrawl when I took some aleve and it didn't make a dent. I also experienced light head, and dizziness. I am a carb o holic so I figured my body would act like its getting off crack LOL

Mostly I just get really tired for a few days to a week.

The good side-effects far outweigh the bad - once the energy kicks in, appetite suppresses, and my joints stop aching it's all good.

I feel cold for the first time in many years. Our house thermostat is usually set on 67 degrees winter and summer. I have ceiling and table fans pointed at me day and night at home. My classroom is controlled by a computer at a central location, all are set at 78 degrees (air-conditioning) and 68 degrees(heating) so there are two 12 inch fans blowing on me at all times-year round. This past week I have been shivering at my house and have reset the thermostat to 74 degrees and spend a lot of time in the 99 degree heat index outdoors of humid Tennessee.

A few bouts of Induction Flu nausea-cured so far by Lite Salt in hot chicken broth.

Shin pain relieved by the potassium in Lite Salt as well as heating pads and Motrin.
I am not exercising yet-after two weeks of the dramatic shift in food intake during Induction I will begin walking 15 minutes daily until I have some stamina.

When I first tried to go from a million a day down to none I had all kinds of symptoms. Nausea
headache
very little patience
irritable
dizziness
fatigue
felt sort of "drunk" (Maybe, never been drunk)
I literally couldn't talk. I would try and couldn't think of the right words. It was scary and frustrating.

I ended up doing NO carb from morning until 3 P.M. for a few days. Then went until 6 P.M. then until 8. Then went to Atkins.

I had a monster headache, first was so tired, then got so much energy, very, very irritable, to the point where my family wanted me to stop doing what I was doing!
But I also realized my heartburn was just gone, plus I've has IBS for forever, it's helped that so much.
The good so outweighs the bad beginning, and that was only cause I was coming off the "poison"!

I had the fatigue, irritability that a lot of others had. I also had a lot of digestive issues that initially made me nervous because I've had surgery for diverticulitis before - some stomach cramping, diarrhea (very dark too - sorry if this is TMI, but someone else might be experiencing it and worrying also) and gassiness. But the good news is that all that has passed only a week in!

I've had all the symptoms mentioned at one time or another. The first time I got a monster migraine and felt like I had the flu. Every subsequent time I have done induction the symptoms lessened, now I'm in ketosis most all of the time without side effects maybe insomnia a bit once in a while.

I didn't really have any carb withdrawal symptoms. I may have had a headache on one of the first few days, but headaches aren't unusual for me, so I never attributed it to starting low carb. By day 4 I felt great - it's not that I felt bad on the first few days; I felt the same as I had the few days before that - but once I got going I really felt much better than I did before low carbing.

Killer Headache
Dizziness/Fainting when working out hard
Irritability
Nausea
Trouble spelling. (see above)

It pretty much sucks. But I can get through it. Last night I had a few bites of yogurt to try and calm them. Didn't work... This too shall pass!

2 cups of regular sodium chicken broth should ease your symptoms if not cure them!!

The headaches, dizziness and general fatigue may all improve if you are eating more salt. Low carbing has a diuretic effect that causes your body to flush out retained water as your glycogen stores are depleted.

You MUST drink plenty of water, especially in those first few days, or you may become dehydrated. In addition, you need salt and potassium to keep your body fluids balanced. A good way to get enough salt is to sip some salty broth (check the ingredients if you use canned broth--try to avoid MSG and added starches). I think Swanson's natural broth with 1/3 less sodium is a good, safe broth to drink or make your own (it's SO easy!).

Add salt to food, too--don't be afraid. On the SAD we eat so much processed stuff loaded with sodium. As you get into this WOE, you will find it easiest to prepare your own food, and you will not be getting anywhere near the levels of sodium you get from processed food products.
