Has anyone ever made an apple pie and left the peels on?

Have you ever had a baked apple with the skin on? The skin gets pretty tough when
you bake the apple..

Ya, I think the only time it would be fine to leave it on would be with a Waldorf salad or something like that.

Not everyone here is on low carb. Some people are on maintenance and apples are allowed. We answer lots of general cooking questions about different foods.

That said, I wouldn't make an apple pie with the skins on.

This is the best place to ask any questions about cooking or recipes.
There are lots of fine cooks on this site that will be happy to help you with any questions you have.
Personally, I peel the apples for apple pie.
I do low carb and I eat an occasional apple with no worries.

I once made an apple pie without first peeling the apples. I'll never do it again. The peeling doesn't get tender, so it's kinda like having little strips of paper or something mixed in with your pie filling. Definitely wasn't good. My DS, who was about 9 at the time, asked me what on earth I was thinking to do such a dumb thing!

Live and learn right? LOL I think we have all done things like that not realizing at the time how it would turn out.

Please don't make people feel bad about asking questions about recipe help..look at the name of this forum, it's called lowcarb recipe HELP & suggestions. I am diabetic and I eat a small apple everyday!! So yes apples are for low carb'n. Some people eat really low carb and others like me eat just to control their BS.

i recently made apple muffins (non low carb) and it said leave the peels on. they were wonderful and you couldnt tell they were in the muffins. most of the nutrition is in the peel.

in pie they def would get tough.

A friend of mine recently made an apple pie for Thanksgiving and left the peels on. It was a reddish apple not green but I don't know what type he used. I agree that usually the peels are a big mistake but in this case it was actually really good. One key element may be the amount of apples used - in this case A LOT when you use a small amount the pie dries out more and the peels are like curled cardboard in your pie.

Apples can definitely be a part of a low carb diet, especially the small ones. There are different stages on all low carb diets for a reason!

I make a yam dish for Thanksgiving that uses granny smith apples. The apples are diced very small with the skin on (makes a nice color contrast). The apples are small enough so you don't notice the skin. But sliced apples with skin in a pie would definitely be problematic. Just like tomatoes that aren't peeled in a dish, the skin is papery and not appetizing.

I made an apple crumble and used 1/4 the amount of apples required, and substituted peeled and seeded zucchini slices for the balance of the apples. Basically cut the zucchini lengthwise and scraped out the seeds down the center. Absolutely fantastic and you wouldn't know they were zucchini and not apple slices!! Need a bunch of zucchini for this. Found the recipe online somewhere.
