Is almond meal the same thing as almond flour?

I called a store for almond flour and they said they don't have the packaged kind but they sell almond meal in bulk. Is this the same thing?

Well, yes - and no!

To ME, almond meal is ground whole almonds, while almond flour is ground, blanched almonds.

But I've seen them used interchangeably.

I prefer almond flour, and I prefer Honeyville Grain almond flour - it's wonderful, fine, almost fluffy stuff. I get great results with my baked goodies using it.

I've also used Trader Joe's almond meal, and it's fine, but you get a heavier, darker finished product with it. For some things, like carrot cake, I doubt it matters, but in other things, like pound cake, where you want a lighter finished product, I think the almond flour is a better choice.

HTH!

I agree with Char but, would add that almond flour is much finer. It's very much a flour consistency while almond meal to me is coarser.

But, of course, everything depends upon where you buy it. Honeyville is a very fine blanched almond flour. The almond meal I get at Sprouts is a coarser, unblanced almond meal.

When I get back home I'm going to order some from Honeyville. But it's too late for me to order it here for Thanksgiving goodies.

I'm getting it at Central Market in San Antonio and they have it in bulk. I'll have to put up with the coarser stuff for now.
