Premier Nutrition Protein Shake - opinion?

I just found these at costco, 18 pack for $24. I usually drink the Atkins shakes because of my hectic school schedule - then I can crack one open between my classes and not be ravenous by dinner.

It has 160 calories, 5g carbs, 3g fiber. Pretty comparable to the Atkins shakes. Has anyone had any experience with these? At the rate I drink shakes, I'd much prefer this price over Atkins.

I bought "Metabolic Response Modifiers Whey Pumped Dutch Chocolate" which only has 1 carb, no artificial sweeteners. It only has 18g protein, but I'll take that over higher carbs. It received very good ratings (I haven't received it yet).

I bought them...they tasted ok, I think better than EAS.

BUT...they gave me the worst stomach ache w/ bloating everytime I drank them.
I too bought them due to a busy school/work schedule so I thought they'd be handy but b/c of the side effects of them, I only felt safe to drink at home when in a crunch so it took away from the initial purpose of buying them.

[COLOR="Blue"]Please let us know how the protein powder is when you get it. I would be real interested to maybe try this.....looks good on paper...I just wonder how the Stevia makes it taste.....as in...aftertaste.

Thanks

Yes, I'm wondering too - I'm not fond of Stevia either. But wanted to avoid splenda. Chocolate flavor can often cover bad after tastes I guess! Should get by tomorrow & will let you all know.

I have a question to those of you who use protein shakes (sorry to go off topic). I was thinking of adding a fat to the shake. The reason I wanted to do liquid protein is because I wanted a quicker digestible protein to help keep my blood sugar up. And the extra fat I know will help the cause.

What kind of fats/oils can I add to a protein shake? The only thing I can think of is coconut oil - which actually I've never even tried.

Do you have a BJ's near you? They have the EAS Carb Control Chocolate Fudge.

24pack for $26.95

These shakes are great, but I have the same questions

I've seen other posts warning against non-Atkins shakes, but the Premier Nutrition shake label seems to check out in terms of carbs. Could the 1 sugar gram delay or thwart ketosis? I am in induction now.

It is a great-tasting and filling shake...and a great price at Costco.

I usually add nuts or nut butters. You can make a chocolate peanut butter shake -- YUM!!

Also, flax seed.

They are higher in protein but lower in fat than Atkins shakes (which is not necessarily a good thing on this WOE)... calories are roughly the same. They taste "pretty good" and only come in Chocolate. I also bought some at Costco. They are fairly high in sodium, comp to Atkins. Overall I think Atkins is better for this WOE, and has more vitamins... but Premeir comes close and also the taste is decent. Maybe you can bring some cheese slices or mix in some HWC to up the fat a bit.

ETA They do NOT have sugar alcohols which is in my book.

The person that said it made them bloat.... do they have soy in them? I don't remember... Soy does that to some people.

HWC!!! Almond Milk. Flax oil.

Coconut oil clumps (it IS a saturated fat, so think the texture of cold beef fat) and does not mix in well at all. Still, some people like it soo....

Thanks - I think I'll go with the HWC! Didn't think of that. And maybe a few fish oil capsules. One less thing to buy, I'm allergic to flax, and I'm on induction so I can't have any nuts.

For those waiting on a review of the Metabolic Response, they shipped a day later than I thought, and I'll be getting it tomorrow.

I received the metabolic response.

Keep in mind I haven't drank sugared 'drinks' in forever. So I'm not even use to a very sugary taste at all. So real sugar would even taste off to me.

You can taste the stevia. But not the same strong aftertaste that I've experienced putting stevia in my coffee. I just quickly mixed it in some room temperature water without making it into a shake, so that doesn't make it quite that palatable. It's sweet to me, and as I said, sugar would be sweet to me too. I can certainly live with it. I've never used a protein drink so I really don't have anything to compare it with in regard to that. I guess I would compare it to carnation instant drink, though it's been a very long time since I've had that.

So take it for what it's worth. I guess I'd give it 3.8 out of 5 stars.

Well, thanks for the review...... I wonder if it would not be so sugary if you blended it with cold water and ice cubes..................

response from premier customer svc

I sent an inquiry to Premier via their website and got this response:

"You won’t find another high protein shake with 1 gram of sugar. It very hard to completely eliminated all sugars. Our shakes are perfect for the Atkins diet."

I am finishing week 1 of induction and this shake is my only variance from the Atkins blueprint. We'll see where I am at in a week.

Thanks.

Well, I still think that it's alot of protein (30grams) without a lot of fat (3 grams) and would add some HWC or something to it. Low carb low fat = no good for most.

I typically drink the Adkins shakes every morning, but one of my employees brought me one of their Premier chocolate shakes they got at Costco.

Same net carb count, but the Premier has 30 protein versus 15 for Adkins. I can get the Adkins shakes at the commisary for 5.25 a four-pack, but the 30 grams of protein cannot be beat. I just drank it 20 min ago, so I will have to see if it has any of the negative after effects. The Adkins shakes go down pretty good for me, but I could use the extra protein if these Premier shakes go down good.

I've bought them several times. One time I bought a case and every single one had this nasty sludge in them. So much sludge there wasn't enough room in the container to shake it up.

DH emailed them and called them. They sent me a coupon for a free case. I haven't had a problem since. I like them.

I've never had them. But I can relate to being a student on a tight schedule and needing something you can have in between classes. Often what I do is make a OMM. Its portable and filling and you control what goes in there. You can use protein powder combined with flax to make a yummy pumpkin protein muffin. I also make chocolate flax muffins. Keeps me until I get home. Just a thought. Most store bought shakes and bars are yucky to me.

They taste fine, but they are a lot thicker than the Atkins Shakes. They only come in one flavor. Chocolate.

The Atkins shakes come in a lot more flavors. I love the Caramel Latte!!!! I can drink that every day.

The Premier Nutrition Protein Shakes seem to be more filling since they have 30g of protein. It takes me a lot longer to get a full one down though.
