Russell Stover's Net Carbs & Sugar Free

Hi everyone,

I was looking at Russell Stover's website (thanks to LESSOFME's post about Easter candy!) and noticed they have 2 different lines of candy: Net Carbs and Sugar Free. I can't find ingredient lists on their website, so I'm wondering: what's the difference? The description for the Net Carbs products say "no sugar carbs." So do the Net Carbs products not use sugar alcohols?

Thanks!

They all use maltitol, which isn't even low carb. I see less of the "net carb" products now, and more "sugar-free." It's a marketing gimmick.

Yup most all sugar alcohol have calories and carbs. Many people don't have trouble with erythritol or xylitol though. Google sugar alcohols for a wealth of info. If it seems to good to be real it usually is. About.com has some good articles about this too.

I'm not sure of the difference other than what jacksmixedtape said, a marketing gimmick. If you really feel you need some of them to get through Easter, then go Walgreens and browse. They have a ton of sugar free candy. Just remember that your tummy will not be happy if you eat more than 1 or 2.

There is no difference in the Russell Stovers candies... one is in a red bag, the other is green.

There was a thread about his YEARS ago and someone emailed Russell Stover. The question to the company was "why did the net carb product cost more than the SF." If you compare the ingredients, they are (or were) the EXACT same for net carb vs SF. The company's response was basically that THEY knew there was a difference in the way the candies were made but either couldn't or wouldn't explain.

So, unless something has changed since then, the difference was that the net carb cost more than the SF. I can't eat them unless, like Cleo said, I want to be queen for the weekend!

This means your body is digesting the maltitol and isomalt and the carb count is higher than what the packaging states-your body is processing the SA's.

They don't make everyone sick, as LisaB says if you're not getting sick it means your body is processing it and the "net impact" on your body is probably higher than what it says on the package. Seems to be a wide range of sensitivity, lil miss wasn't feeling too good after one serving, I can have two but three is way too much for my system, other people it doesn't bother at all.

And they don't make most people sick if you stick to one serving. Problem is some of those servings seem pretty small - if there are 6 bits of candy in a bag, not all of us will eat only two of them just because that's what the label says a serving is

A great alternative for an occasional treat is chocolate with a high cocoa content. I'm looking at an Endangered Species Supreme Dark Chocolate bar, it has 15 squares that are about the same size as (or maybe a tad smaller than) a Russell Stover toffee square. The whole bar (72% cocoa) has 14g total, 9 net, so each square has less than one gram of carbohydrates. And one or two squares is usually enough.

wow--they don't "lose" a lot of carbs when they take out the sugar, do they? That's a 1 ounce package w/23 g. carbs...

I eat these all the time...they really help with the sweet tooth cravings. they don't make me sick at all, but i do get major rumblings in my tummy...and only some sugar free candy will make my tummy make all those noises...chocolate DOESN'T (thank GOD!!) but twizzlers do...if i have 2 twizzlers, my tummy is going nuts within 20 minutes, guaranteed...but it never actually makes me sick or have to run to the bathroom, so i eat it anyways...

Years ago I got out my trusty blood sugar meter and tested 3 Low Carb Russell Stover candies and 3 regular ones.

What I learned was that the "low carb" version raised my blood sugar almost as high as the regular, but it took another hour or so for the carbs to show up in my bloodstream. Testing at 3 hours would be necessary which could fool a lot of people.

I also learned that the taste of the low carb versions was so inferior to that of the real ones, that it was better to eat a real one and take the carb hit up front rather than delude myself that the nasty tasting low carb one was better for me.

Ingredients: Maltitol, Isomalt, Polyglycitol Syrup, Sorbitol, Gelatin, Calcium Chloride, Natural Flavors, Yellow #5 Lake, Sucralose, Potassium Sorbate (A Preservative), Carnauba Wax.

the first and main ingrediant in SF Peeps is maltitol...the first FOUR ingredients are sugar alcohols!!! they used just enough splenda in their mix (see it way down towards the end of the list?!) to be able to put it on the packaging.

for anyone sugar alcohol-wary...be warned!

I saw these for the first time last year, noticed the same thing, wondered how many parents were going to buy these for their kids at Easter, and how many of them wouldn't read the label and would think they're sweetened with just Splenda, and how many of those kids would sneak into their baskets when the grownups weren't looking and chow down on all those sf peeps, and how long it would take those parents to figure out what caused the sudden onset of tummyaches and diarrhea in their little tikes.

I was so tempted today at Kroger to buy the SF Peeps! I LOVED Peeps! But I stopped myself after looking at the package...they were 23 carbs and 23 Sugar Alcohol so I knew they would tear my tummy up!
I've found this saying to be right on the money as far as sugar free candies & chocolate go... if it sounds too good to be true....it probably is!

Is your blood sugar meter something that diabetics use? It's great that you can test certain foods to see if they will spike your blood sugar. I would like one of those!

***BUMP***

Just bought Russelll Stover's SF "Reserve Collection" - classy, I know - in the dark chocolate, 60% cacao, and it is deLIsh! I think they count a serving as 3 squares (good-sized squares, too), but just one is just right before bed - has anyone tried?

So do the Net Carbs products not use sugar alcohols?

Thanks!
I like the green bag Russell Stover's mint patties, the caramel patties, the coconut patties but I can't eat more than one bag a day LOL!!!! (6 pieces) because they WILL make you go to the bathroom quick!!!
