What is the best brand of pork rinds?

And where do you buy them? I have tried a couple of PR recipes that I thought had potential. However, I didn't like the grainy quality the rinds had even though I ground them well in the food processor. What do you use and where do you buy them?

Believe it or not, the pork rinds from Aldi's are great... light & fluffy, available in plain and hot & spicy.

I've tried Wise and Bakenettes (sp?) Hot & Spicy but my new favorite is Rudolph's Barbecue Pork Rinds. I buy them at Wal-Mart - a 6 oz bag for $1.50.

Without a doubt I'd have to say Turkey Creek, they have them in Plain, BBQ, Hot BBQ & Salt & Vinegar and the only place I've ever seen them is at this Chevron store locally. However you can order them from their website, their hot sauce is great too.

I've posted many times that I thought Pork Rinds tasted like cardboard but I must retract that statement. I just tasted J & J Critters Pork Rinds (garlic, plain, BBQ and another one) and they are fabulous. I bought the garlic flavor along with J & J's bacon/tomato dip. I found these products at Low Carb Connections.

i bought these tonite thinking 0 carbs but now it says 1 carb in 9 peices ingredients pork rinds lard and salt so were is the carbs.plus it could put some of us over our count thinking they were 0

Turkey Creek - they have them at my local grocer as well as the Dollar Stores. We like these because they are lower in sodium than the other brands.

Wow, this is an oldie but goodie thread! LOL!

I have a new favorite - chicharron con carne - at Mi Pueblo market, they sell them fresh and hot every day. They're about 2" thick with meat/skin that has been deep-fried. OH they're heavenly! :P

Does Fiesta make fresh pork rinds on the premises? I'd love to try fresh ones but I don't know of any place around here that sells them. The closest Fiesta is a bit of a drive for me but it might be worth the trip.

The ones with the meat (which I just bought and had for lunch, BTW!) are called "Chicharron Carnudo" here - not sure if that's something Mi Pueblo came up with or if it's universal? Anyway they will make you swoon.

They didn't have the freshly cooked chicharron today (just the regular kind) so I got two BIG pieces of the carnudo and a bag of cracklins. Even the cracklins still have a little meat clinging to them!

Call around and ask the markets - most of the ones here make chicharron fresh daily.

I prefer the fresh ones from the hispanic market in my area, but I like Macs pork cracklins from the regular market if I can't get there.

Charski, I found this recipe online for making them. I hope that the ones you bought didn't have flour on them like these do:

How to make chicharron carnudo

At the request of Professor Salt, I'm moving this from the LA discussion board, where they helped me find the raw materials for Colombian-style chicharron (AKA chicharron carnudo). This is chicharron with some meat on it -- very different from the Mexican-style chicharron that is widely available in the US.

Buy some pork bellies (chicharron carnudo). I found mine at an Asian grocery store (99 Ranch) and at a Latino market (Vallarta). If you can, have the butcher cut it into 1-inch wide strips. The pieces will be 1 inch wide, about an inch thick, and probably six inches long.

In a skillet, heat some vegetable oil on medium-to-high heat. The oil should be about a quarter inch deep in the pan.

Score the chicharron strips about every inch. Cut towards the skin side, but do not cut through the skin.

Rub a little bit of baking soda on the skin side (this will make it crispier).

Rub a bit of salt on the chicarron.

Dredge the whole chicharron strip in flour.

Put the chicharron strip skin-side down in the skillet.

Once the skin is crispy, then flip the chicharron over until it is heated through. This should take 7-10 minutes.

Drain on a paper towel and eat when it has cooled a bit (or burn your tongue like me in impatient anticipation of the taste...)

I don't THINK these do, LindaSue, but next time I go there I'm gonna ask. These don't APPEAR to have any coating, just deep-fried.

LindaSue, I hope you read back...I found that Fiesta here does have many delicious flavors from a brand called Mac's; salt and pepper, jalepeno and cheese, and lime and chile were the 3 I picked up (plus plain.) They also make them fresh on the premises, but kind of large bags; I don't know that even I can eat that many in a week!! However, I DO know where to pick them up for my next LC party.

I love chicharrones!! I grew up eating these...my dad makes them still occasionally...they are the best thing you have ever had, and in my high carb days, I would have fresh flour tortilla's, refried beans and chicharrones...oh, they are good!!! They are crunchy and meaty and taste so delicious!!!
