Does anyone else go through phases with brain fog? For the longest time I thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn't focus on my work. And every night I enjoy reading before I go to sleep, but I can't retain what I'm reading. I'm thinking it's something with my eating and the thyroid.

Is there anyone out there? I have a hypothyroid. After 8 years, I am still not regulated on my synthroid I take 200 mcg daily right now. I do have an appointment this coming Tuesday. To discuss my last bloodwork, and possibly change my synthroid again? I don't know. My issue is I go through phases. I was not overweight when I found out I was hypo. I was getting heart palpitations, and being that I had just turned 30, I was scared. My dr. couldn't figure it out, so he did a complete bloodwork on me, and my level came back as 126. My dr. said it was the highest he had ever seen. My synthroid started immediately. A few months later, a few extra pounds appeared. My dr. said no worries, probably need to increase your synthroid again. Just a few weeks ago, I weighed in at 216. My ideal, healthy weight should be around 130-135. I was 132 lbs 8 years ago. So...here's my dilemma. Some days I don't WANT to take my synthroid. Some days I am pissed off that I have gained so much weight. Some days turn into a week. And, then I realize there is nothing I can do, because now when I stop taking it, I REALLY do have symptoms. And, so I start taking it again. And, then, a few months will pass, and the same thing will happen all over again. I get so frustrated that this has happened to me. I know stopping is dangerous. Sometimes I feel like I am depressed because of it.

My doctor never told me not to eat certain foods. He never told me anything like that. I just read some of these posts and I am in awe.

First of all, don't believe everything you read online about thyroid issues. There's a lot of hysteria out there. For example, I asked my endo about foods (e.g., raw spinach or broccoli), and he told me not to worry unless I was eating those foods daily.

Keep in mind that a slow thyroid will slow your metabolism, but not necessarily cause weight gain--if you're careful. I lost my initial 60 lbs when I was clearly hypothyroid, but undiagnosed. What's important is to realize that you probably can't eat at the level you're used to eating.

And I don't know what damaged you've caused in failing to take your Synthroid consistently. These are not 'meds' but thyroid hormones, and when you don't take them, you deprive your body of the hormones it needs to regulate its operations. THAT could easily cause weight gain, but I'm not a physician, so I don't know this. What I do know is that I need to take my thyroid Rx daily, as prescribed.

Pretty much my story too. I lost weight even though hypothyroid, have weighed over 60 lbs more than I do now. I feel much, much better, even look younger than I did 10-15 years ago. I would never consider not taking my thyroid hormone. Before all the internet info available, I looked up hypothyroidism in a medical dictionary at the library. Not a pretty picture if left untreated.

Hi there,

Try candida diet, I was able to loose 6 pounds a week, with all my energy back, you should be very strict to follow the diet.

I have also read on line about foods regarding Hypo, there is conflicting information.

I take levothyroxine, it works for me. I was taking my levo in the morning with cream in my coffee! so, I changed to taking them at night just before I go to bed.

I am 62 years old and have noticed it is really difficult for me to lose weight.
I usually ride a roller coaster on the scale, then get discouraged and go off WOE

I have 30 carbs or less per day and walk over 10k steps most days.
Im really looking forward to the nice weather so I can be consistent with my exercise.

Hypothyroid

I've been on Synthroid and Cytomel for 20 years (T-3 & T-4). I didn't feel any better until I started the cytomel!
Most of that time I was 100 lbs over weight. I've been trying to maintain my weight loss for about a year. I know the struggle of gaining quickly and not knowing why, spending weeks to just lose a little.
Others opinions are usually so off base and explaining why is useless. I try to chalk it up to good intentions.
I had cancer last year and so I even get the "You lost weight because of your cancer!"....sigh
I knew not to take my meds anytime near taking Vitamins, but recently learned that calcium and iron fortified food and antacids can also inhibit absorption of the Synthroid 4 hours after taking it. No meal replacements for me in the am.
Also, I only have my blood drawn in the am and that morning I skip my meds until after the blood draw. I got this from a Dietitian who is also hypothyroid and studied the absorption rates and the length of time they stay in the body. I've asked my PCP, a couple of pharmacists and every lab tech.... not one of them has heard of holding off on taking the dose. My PCP says it makes sense. Maybe this is isn't news, but thought out was worth a comment, esp if your dose gets changed often.

If i had more levels of T3 has any harmful side-effects.
I work at night shifts. I suffer from lack of sleep.
So this might be the reason of high levels of T3. Can you suggest?

I have Hashimoto's (low thyroid) and take t4 (75mcg levothyroxine) for it. My t3 levels are just....b...a...r...e...l..y in the normal range so my endo won't prescribe cytomel (t3) Drives me crazy! I know if I could get those levels up I would feel so much better and have an easier time losing weight. Along with low thyroid, I take a med that causes weight gain. Just my luck. I am still hoping she (my endo) will start me on 5mcg (or more) cytomel to at least see if it helps me. Wish me luck.

Just came across this...wish I could stick it up on a billboard somewhere. One of the most awkward and uncomfortable things for me is when people criticize me for being low energy or, worse, compliment me on days when I seem to have "so much energy". (As if it's something in my hands!) When I first started taking thyroid medicine, someone (who had no idea about the medicine) sent me a gushing message to that effect, and I just found it really creepy.

Wow...I take it back... that is even MORE CREEPY. Hard to believe the things that come out of people's mouths!

Hi Midlife99, nice to see a familiar face
I will pray the endo will understand how frustrating it is to be stuck

I have a low thyroid, take 100mcg, feel good with that level
using Levothyroxine
I do have spells of sweating and brain fog from time to time
I do struggle to lose weight, just jumped on the scale due to frustration eating
Back on track now
Hope to see some new ways to see progress even with the thyroid issue
I do need to increase my exercise, that is a must
I know that would help my attitude and my loss
