Really good post, Andrea. You sometimes have to be a patient person to be successful in the long run on JUDDD. Those who live and die by the number on a scale may sometimes find they are disappointed to not see much loss going on there, and yet.. as time goes on, they can recognize changes in their health, like a decreased sensitivity to carbs or a much better response to insulin, a better blood pressure reading, etc.

And INCHES lost! Like oropendola shared, SIX INCHES lost and not much difference on the scale, but.. that's just re-shuffling stuff around on the inside, and then the body will start in on some more weight loss.

I always figured there were some things in my body that weren't working all that well, else I wouldn't have become so obese, etc. So whether I lost a lot of weight quickly wasn't really as important overall as getting myself fixed on the inside. Once I was working better, weight loss would pick up. Well, I actually didn't have to wait for weight loss, as I experienced it right along, although not as fast as some do, but I knew that all of me would be better for following JUDDD in the long run.

Your weight on the scale is NOT always directly correlated to the number of calories you ate the day before. This is likely why we sometimes see losses after our UDs and gains after even the best of DDs.

Just because you had a great loss after an UD of xxxx calories one time, does not make that your magic number. The loss on the scale could be due to something you ate or did 3 or 4 days prior. I would always look for a pattern of losses at xxxx number of calories before I decided that a certain number was really my magic number.

I would hate for someone new to get frustrated when they step on the scale after an awesome DD and see a bounce up and think, "what the heck am I doing wrong?" When the fact is, you're likely doing everything right.

It's not like strict LC where, if I had a cheat day I'd immediately see it on the scale the next day and have to make an immediate shift back to strict LC in order to get back on-plan to make it work. With JUDDD, you just keep working the plan day after day, and the magic starts to happen. Even when we have the occasional Up Up and Away Day...you may see that show up on the scale and you may not. That's the magic of JUDDD!

We just have to learn that over time the bounces will all head in the right direction and that we don't need to panic and make changes immediately after seeing a scale number that went in the "wrong" direction one day.

ETA: I posted part of this on another thread, but thought the idea might help more new JUDDD BUDDDs, so that's why I started a thread.

How did I miss this?

Back down--and a new low

After I ate enough food at a St Pat's party to fuel a bagpipe regiment I'm not only back down to my pre-3/17 weight, I've lost another 1/2 pound
A good DD yesterday at 450 calories--I was hungry at bedtime and thought I needed to eat something so I could sleep--it went like this:
"Sooo hungry;can't sleep.I think I'll get up and eat 100 cals of something. 550 cals will still be a good DD. SOOOO hungry Really, really can't sleep Maybe I'll have some.........zzzzzzzzzzzzzz."

Thinking about starting judd tomorrow. Atkins isn't working for me this time around, even gained on an egg fast! Im used to the rapid weightloss i've experienced with lc/atkins but i do believe my body is burnt out. I'll miss the definate edge ketosis gives but doing lc with judd would be too hard and probably not productive at this point. So, even though i realize it's an entirely personal decision, should i be patient and stay the course with atkins or give judd a try? Also, how does coffee w/cream fit in on a dd? Is it ok if in the 500 calories? Thanks for any info.

Come to the JUDDD side! Yes, you can have creamer as long as it fits within the 500 cals.

I tried doing Atkins off-and-on for 4 years (2011-2014). At most I would do 3-4 weeks, then quit. Good losses too - 15 pounds, 20 pounds, etc. I physically felt really well, but I would spend the whole time obsessing about the carbs I couldn't have and feeling weird/anxious about any social gathering. I would desperately crave things like rice and oranges - not junky carbs. I could never be like those superhero LC'ers you see on the main forum making their cauliflower pizza crusts, happy as a clam wrapped in bacon. It never, ever could feel like a "permanent" fix to me (just the thought would have made me despair tbh).

One day on the Atkins forum, I was moaning about my constant cycle of failures, "will this ever click for me", etc, and one of the superhero Cauliflower Alfredo types (with 8,000+ posts and 120 pounds lost, maintained over 6 years) basically told me "Have you thought about JUDDD? This WOE isn't right for you".

And I will thank her forever.

Plus, I HATE eggs.

Just remember that if you add carbs back there will be initial water weight gain, but you will still be losing body fat if you are sticking with your UD/DD calories.
