p0rtia's Tis the Season Holiday Challenge

Whatever your way of eating, it takes extra focus to stick to it as the holidays near. In addition to the parties and the outings and the cooking, we often experience a sense of holiday food entitlement.

It's the festival season, and that means wonderful foods. But it's even better if we can plan when to celebrate—and when not to. And that's always easier to in the company of friends.

So whatever you're doing for the next two or three weeks, why not do it here? A place to state your intentions, record your progress, and just vent. Supporters welcome.

Tis the Season!

Day 1 - Monday, Dec. 1

My current weight might be where I want to be or I might still want to lose four or five pounds. But for this month (well, through January 14) my goal is simply not to gain weight. I'm usually on my own (with two border collies who are not a bad influence), but my husband and daughter will be home for the holidays (husband for over a month and daughter unfortunately for less than two weeks), and I want to be able to enjoy food yet not gain weight.

So this means that I need to work on mindful eating. Not eating out of habit or boredom, ideally not eating out of stress (and there can be stress with family occasions), and not eating unless there's something I really want to eat. I've been good at this before, and I need to summon up those habits again. One tricky angle is that I do want to cook several nights a week with family home, and I'll have to be really disciplined to make it through such a week without my weight going up.

My goal is to stick to LC (<50) during this period of many stressors so that I either maintain or lose a pound or two. EOD JUDDD right now, probably 4:3 next week.

I've invented a "Stressor Release Sytem" to help me through the next ten days. I'm not going to count calories on UDs as long as I stay LC. Since I've been doing 1700-1800 UDs for the past two months, eating to satiety feels like birthday party.

Two doctors appointments today (UD), close up the cabin tomorrow (DD), off to Boston Wednesday (UD). Thursday's DD is going to be the first really tough one.

I don't think I've ever had a December when I did not gain at least 10 lbs. I am committed to bucking that trend this year.

Deep breath!

Relating to the chat thread, my challenge is to accept the fatigue and to deal with the drive to eat carbs to improve the tiredness. I'm not craving sweets or biscuits but it's granola and Shredded Wheat. I still can't taste much but I seem to be drawn to crunch and the so-called slow release grains plus nuts.

I'm part way through planning for an experiment to shift my vitamin D levels and see if that affects the fatigue and auto-immune arthritis while I'm at it. Given my difficulties with vitamin D supplements (mentioned in chat thread) I've opted to include cod livers and monkfish livers in my diet and monitor what happens via blood tests to see if that's any better at pushing my levels up. I'm partly shrieking inside at the astonishing amount of fat I shall have to eat but it's a useful experiment for me to try.

And, I echo the sentiments of the need to enjoy the holiday season and observe that we can choose when that enjoyment involves eating - how much, and what is always in our choice.

Good Morning!

Thank you, p0rtia for starting this thread! How long will you be staying in Boston?

My goal for the month is to get as close to onederland as possible through very mindful eating (not the junk I've been eating lately!) and continue to work on recognizing when old eating habits crop up (as they did this past weekend) and nip that in the bud!

I'm also making the commitment to *move* this month! It never did happen last month, but I'm working on a plan for this month!

I have two events that I have to deal with this month involving food: one is a holiday luncheon at Olive Garden on the 12th. I plan on just having salad, as I'm not a huge fan of OG. The past few times I've gone to this luncheon I've gotten the fried lasagna appetizer, but it didn't really agree with me last year, so I really don't want it. The second is Christmas Eve. We always go out to a really nice steak place. I'm not sure what I'll get, but I'm resolving right now to only eat half!

My big goal is 10 lbs by Christmas. (including start up water loss ) but remember from past years how just fasting helped me feel good despite the goodies. If I maintain, that'll be good too, but I think I can swing it.

handbells - (from chat thread re: low carb) My head and heard really and truly want to stay low carb. Likewise my head and heart knows I will indulge, but I want to pick and choose those indulgences. Agreed to being on the right track again.

Thanks for the new thread p0rtia, enjoyed reading all the goals so far.

I'm trying to work on making JUDDD stress free this time around. I want to keep it low carb for the most part, especially during the week and on DDs. If I chose to indulge, I do not want to stress about it. It also means trying my best to let any lack of movement in the scales OR how my clothes feel derail me. Both those can really have me wanting to try something else and can make me feel the most defeated even when I feel I'm doing so well on paper.

I think I'm going to put these goals in my siggy.

So, my December goals:
-Sticking to mainly low carb but no stressing, butt-kicking, or head bashing when I don't.
-Sticking as best I can to my M/W/F DD schedule, but no stressing, butt-kicking, or head bashing if those get off kilter.
-Sticking to the belief that despite any changes in the scale or lack of other NSV's there has got to be some other good things going on inside!

I'm marking my spot to get updates. This is a very good thread for inspiration! I didn't lose the 5 lbs I planned to lose by Thanksgiving, but will repeat that goal for year end. My main goal is to get rid of the junk food I've been eating in the past week.

195 by New Years Eve!!

Hi everyone. Thanks Portia for starting this thread. I restarted JUDD last January after gaining back 40 of the 50 pounds I lost. So I am really trying to focus on losing and working out how to maintain it at the same time. I lost 20 pounds through the first part of this year and then vacations and other events happened. I kinda fell into the pattern of a 5:2 with one MD. So I am proud of myself for maintaining and not just going hog wild. My goal for this December is to get to a solid 177 to give me inspiration after the new year to lose the next 20 pounds. Those first few months of a new year always seem for me the time I can really focus on weight loss. Love reading everyone's goals. They are very inspirational. And thanks to everyone who posts regularly. I came back here often though out the year for inspiration and it really does help. Another of my goals is to get back to posting more often. Also am trying to get back to true EOD pattern. The MD does seem to cause my appetite to be harder to control.

Thanks for starting us off p0rtia! My goal is to do EOD until Christmas or Christmas Eve. (Depending on what DW wants to do for Xmas Eve).

I will face the scale tonight to see what I gained during my vacation, but not expecting a friendly number.

I know that I have a lunch date on 12/14 and a dinner on 12/18. I may be able to get away with not eating at the dinner on 12/18 as it's a buffet and not a formal sitdown meal where it would seem rude not to eat, but we shall see.

Count me in. I'm trying to get back to my OMAD routine, with some solid 1-2 DDs during the next two weeks. I'm actually going to veto some social events for the next two weekends, as I've had consistent Fri-Sat-Sun UDs for the last month! I'm surprised my weight isn't higher than it is....

Hi everybody!

Wow, what a turnout! An amazing array of goals and plans, too, demonstrating the complexity of weight management.

Leona -- You're link didn't work -- I pasted and copied it and it is a hoot. Please try again. But if you have problems, I'll be happy to post it.

Nilla -- Stress-free JUDDD. I like this concept. Once again we are in a similar place. We will do our best!

quietnite -- Yes, please. Post your thoughts again, purty please.

Hi Carly, Kissa, and Slow! Just love it that the Maintainers are on board. Had a great doc appointment with my PCP today, who is sadly leaving the area next month. I have zero issues currently, so we mostly reminisced about when I first met her (some 135 lb ago) and the wonderful things she said, giving me hope. You would like her. So many inspirations and supporters.

kwerpie! You give me the idea of teaming up for tough DDs. I'm booked for one on Thursday, and have just gotten my sister on board (I'll be staying at her house for a week). I think DD's in December are always tough.

Happy thoughts to all!

I shall try to post more often this month, goal is to weigh between 108.5 - 111 by Christmas Eve!

dh is much better, my weight went back up when he got better, but I do like the way I feel and look at under 110!

I plan on doing ud and md rather then dd, so maybe it will get me to goal a bit slower, time will tell.

Hi ladies! Thanks for this thread p0rtia I want to maintain throughout the holidays and go into New Years Eve under 130 pounds!! I don't know if I've ever done this before...I was 126 pounds a few times...for a few minutes ...before I started gaining the weight back again. This time I have a different mindset, and I am doing LC JUDDD which helps me so much! I also love JUDDD, and the combo is awesome for me. And...if I have something less than exemplary, I don't throw in the towel, but am getting immediately back to what works. I think this time I might finally have a chance to keep the weight off!!

Not quoting anything but enjoying reading and marveling at all of us returnees thanks to p0rtia's simple thread.

Had yet another excellent DD yesterday coming in at 490 calories. With the years flying by the older I get, so too are the days (mostly) which makes DDs pretty easy here lately. (Knock wood)

Read the article and at that picture. Man, I love donuts. Glazed. Warmed in the micro. Haven't had donuts in a few years now. One of these days I'm going to have one. Just. One. Can anyone have just one donut?

Uh, anyway hope y'all have a wonderful day.

Today I've initiated the new vitamin D routine. We'll see how it progresses from here.

DH is on a business trip all next week so I'm planning ahead for what I will need to be opened for me in his absence.

Okay, so my holiday plan is:
4 DD a week- Mon, Tues. Thurs. Fri. Fast all day with cream/tea and then one meal at night. low cal and low carb.
Wed. I eat more still low carb but higher cals.

Saturday and Sunday UD- if there are higher carb indulgences for the holidays they will be planned around these days. If not, higher cal but low carb.

12/23 is all is fair same with 12/25 and New Year's Eve and Day unless I feel like going DD on NYD.

This is the plan. It should keep me from gaining weight and perhaps a small drop. Neither of those things has ever happened over a holiday season before for me.

The idea of control and NO RESTRICTIVE MARTYRDOM is amazing.

Thanks for the thread!!

Hi everyone. Love reading everyone's updates. Congratulations Sloppail on the new low! So far December is going good. Still need to rein in my UD's. Plan in January is to start seriously counting calories on them. But for right now rotations and a solid number is my goal. Hope everyone is having a great day.

Slow, I do worry about you when DH is away, you mention opening things, but your poor hands must give you issues all the time. Do you have good neighbours?

Good to see the great plans here.

As a Britisher, I know nothing about Mayberry, lol. Off to Google.

I'm a bit late to the party but here goes:

December Goals

--Keep DDs very low carb (<10)

--Keep every other day rotation unless special occasion arises. Then rearrange the week to maintain 3 DD per week.

--Tomorrow (Dec 6 - an UD) is DH's office holiday gathering. Formal dinner. The venue is a 'colonial village' in southeastern Michigan which (I've looked up the menu) will include such dishes as 'pork and apples' and 'roast loin of beef'. Goal is to focus on portion control of entree with no dessert.

--Enjoy UDs by making a few low carb cookies (half, or less, of the recipe) from all of those incredible low carb websites that so many talented women have created (Carolyn Ketchum, etc). I've always wanted to try the cookies but never have. Youngest daughter was diagnosed with T1 diabetes 3 years ago and we've been low carb as a family every since. She will come home from college on Dec 22nd and she loves to bake, so I'd like to have a few 'tried and true' yummies for us to make on the 24th. DH will surely help with taste testing as I practice ahead of time!

--Make chicken soup more often. So good as the weather is diving down into the 30s

--Make bone broth every week

--Exercise more regularly. It's been haphazard as of late. Make it routine! Start with 3x/week.

I think that's enough for now!
