Does Anyone Have Irriatable Bowel Syndrome?

I am now being treated for a irritable bowel syndrome but my meds only are helping a tiny bit.
My doc is puzzled as much as I am. Been having it for over a year now.
I feel like I have a stomach bug all the time with this cramping.
He wants the order some blood work and see if we can find the culpit. Hope he can soon because I feeled drained like I am going to pass out all the time.
I thought it might be something I was eating but I have been working on that all year and can find nothing there. So now I began just low carb but that's not helping anything either.
Do any of you have this problem?

Mary.. I had IBS-C and occasionally I have it if I eat wheat. My dr said it could be dairy or wheat. I know it is wheat. I took Bentyl when I was cramping and it helped some.

A really good book is The Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Basically, it is a low carb plan and tells you what foods might irritate. I think you can goggle it and the list of foods come up.

Best of luck...

I was told I have IBS-D. What irritates me (in varying amounts) is olive oil, mayo, and Alfredo sauce (but so far not butter!). But I found that adding 2 psyllium husk capsules (Now brand) three times a day has really helped with the "D".

What would happen is that if I had those fats, I'd start getting cramps about 30 to 45 minutes after eating, slowly moving downward, ending with an urgent rush to the bathroom. And then my whole GI tract would empty out, like I swallowed a bottle of GoLytely.

Thanks Rharmelink.
That's the same thing with me after I eat.
My doc has me on some medication but so far it has not helped much.

I have microscopic colitis diagnosed by colonoscopy. Symptoms can be the same but different disease.

Is your problem diarrhea or constipation?

Did any of you gals have your gallbladders out? My mom did and suffered with the dumping syndrome after she would eat certain things.

I have IBS c/d both. My dr recommends fodmaps. I read some of the literature, looks like just elimination diet until you figure out what triggers you have. I find my nerves/anxiety is a trigger for me.

I have my gallbladder, and I also take Bentyl as needed. But I try not to take it.

I'm going to look up the SBC diet too. Thanks for sharing that CarolynF.

Wishing you well BamaGal 71

You are welcome, Salt..It is a great book and there is a FB page for SCD diet..You can basically find the stuff online, but the book is nice to read.

Basically, when you are having a flare, it's plain chicken broth with meat and rice and carrots. Not carb friendly, but I suppose you could eliminate the rice. However, if you are allergic to chicken/eggs, this wouldn't be a good start.

Other than being tested by a doctor, what is the difference between IBS, Dumping Syndrome, Celiac symptoms? I don't get pain or nausea, but I often have a loose bowel movement not long after a meal. I'm concerned that I'm not absorbing nutrients. I read that Dumping Syndrome is mostly due to sugar, and I don't eat sugar or sweets.

Carol, my mom would get it after having coffee with lunch. It is a result of gallbladder surgery most of the time.

There is a microscopic colitis forum that I visit at perskyfarms. There is a lot of diet information there, including elimination diets, as well as drugs people are using to control their symptoms.

I take immodium every day to control my d as per my gastro. Two in am and 2 four hours later. It has worked very well for me. I am on the road all day and I can't always run to the bathroom.

I carry Immodium with me at all times, but I've been needing it less often lately. Sometimes I just have a loose bowel movement and then I'm OK. Other times it's more severe. But I don't get pain and cramping like others describe.

Thanks.
I do take I'modium for the dirareha and I take a probotic to.
It helps some .
I still get bouts of it, never know when its going to act up though.
I am watching what I eat, have to watch the gassy veggies and coffee to.I cannot eat processed foods either like prepackage food like lunch meats, cheeses etc.
I buy fresh from the deli counter and have it sliced.
But I am trying to keep on top of it.
I do cramp terrible with my irritable bowels but like others that sometimes goes away after a bowel movement but it leaves me feeling ucky for awhile afterwards.
Thanks for your help.

CarolynF thanks for the information. I put the SCD on hold at the library, and ate rice, broth and chicken over the week-end. During a flare I eat what ever feels like I can. That includes rice, plain bread, rice cakes and bananas. Just saying.

Jenn_in_NJ thanks for telling us about perskyfarms they have a lot of helpful information.

Anna

Anna, I think you will find it helpful. You can also join a SCD Facebook page, but you have to adhere to what is in the book. For me, bread was a no no..it's what started it all. But, if it makes you better, then go for it. Best wishes...

My daughter was very ill with IBD and they could never find the reason. She was scoped, biopsied, medicated and nothing helped. She could not work and rarely left the house...stopped at every restroom on the way to appointments.

My mom gave her the SCD book and she healed herself. She did not cheat once for two years and learned how to make every recipe.

She eats LC and stays gluten free. If she eats too many carbs like rice/potato, she starts to have the rumbly tummy and just drinks water.

Thanks for the feedback jem that's good to know.

Thanks for all your help Carolyn. I didn't read the book cover to cover, as I can't do dairy and most of the recipes require dairy. BUT I got a lot of good tips from the book. Helped me figure out I can't do anything apple, cashews, and working on gluten now. (and I haven't eaten rice) Many thanks.

Anna
