Diabetics Progress Reports


Katie on the "Diabetes?" thread suggested starting a separate thread for diabetics to post their progess, problems, suggestions, etc. I recall when I first started reading this forum that their were regular diabetic threads. Seemed like a new one started each week. Does anyone know if I am just imagining that? Wonder what happened that those are no longer on here.

I am currently doing very well controlling my diabetes with the basic Atkins WOE with a few tweaks due to some food sensitivities. I have had an A1c in the low 5's for the last couple years, and find my daily meter levels in the 90's mostly. Rarely up to 110, and sometimes as low as 70. I have a dilated eye exam every August, and so far no changes or problems there. I don't have any "complications" yet, and am planning to avoid them to the greatest extent possible. I was on Metformin for several years, then over the past few years had my dosage decreased, and then totally eliminated this past July. My diabetes is my rock solid motivation for staying on plan all the time. I even consider my diabetes to be a blessing in disguise.

My biggest health concern currently is trying to get my thyroid levels where they need to be. I have Hashimoto's, and for years it was pretty stable, but starting last march my TSH started rising, and my hypo symptoms starting increasing, as well as my weight. I am sort of "doctor shopping" at the moment, looking for someone I trust, that knows the score about thyroid. So you may see me sometimes on the thyroid threads.

There are newly diagnosed diabetics regularly coming to the board looking for info and support. I will gladly share the bit that I know, but it is based on my personal and limited experience. I invite others to join me in creating a thread to offer that welcome and support.

Hi dee,
i had to cut my PM short as my son wanted to go on line. As soon as DH was diagnosed diabetic I went out in searching for information. I have already read DANDR and found Atkins Diabetes Revolution at the library. We have both been devouring the books, and are determined to eat low carb for the forseeable future. I lost weight by the Atkins method and have kept it off, with a few blips, for 12 months. On Thursday DH will go for his first appointment at the Diabetic Clinic. It will be decided then whether he will be given meds and dietary advice, or diet alone.
He wants to try to control his blood sugar by diet alone and I will be happy to eat the same as he does. He needs to lose about 21 - 28 pounds. All gained since he met me!

I look forward to learning about diabetes and hearing about other peoples' experiences on this board.

Hello Dee,
I was still on the old thread but i found this one, I have been doing ok with my Numbers. This is all so new to me. I think i will have to go to a diettion to talk about my Number to see if they are where they should be..
I also have high bloodpresure. iam not sure if they go hand and hand. Iam trying to lose weight and excersice. in one week iam down 19 lbs.Iam feeling stronger.
I have a under active thyroid and have had it for years and I did something stupid .wich no one should ever do. I went off my meds with out my Drs knowing. I paid the price for that.. man was I sick. but iam back on track. I went to boarders and picked up a book on diebites. so it helps..Its great to talk with others.

The diabetes food pyramid is a tool to help you eat a wide range of healthy foods. If you eat the lowest number of servings for each type of food, you’ll eat about 1,600 calories a day. The highest number of servings will give you about 2,800 calories a day. Your calorie needs are based in part on your height, gender, and activity level. Your healthcare provider can help you determine a calorie level that’s right for you.

Fruits
(2 to 4 servings a day)
A serving has 15 grams of carbohydrate, about 60 calories, and no fat.
Healthy low-fat choices: whole fresh fruits or canned fruit with no sugar added.
Milk and Yogurt
(2 to 3 servings a day)

That "diabetes pyramid" doesn't work for everyone, in fact it is likely to make things worse for diabetics. Its simply too many carbohydrates, for most. Plus, it puts an emphasis on low-fat. To me low-fat = hidden sugars. I think people are better off following a low-carb/high-fat diet. It works. Try it.

Krisi Poo, if you buy into that paramid, you're not doing your homework and you'll eventually figure out that it makes a diabetic sicker over time to eat that many carbs. Sure, there are drugs and insulin to help process that many carbs, but then why not just cut the carbs and do with little or no drugs? The answer....drum roll please...is that pharma companies want you to get sicker and take more drugs! Then they make more money. Yes, there is a conspiracy there with profit as a motive. The FDA does not protect us, they are very corrupt and beholden to big pharma. Then big pharma and FDA are who supply docs with "information", and that's how the whole sham gets perpetuated.

I have watched my diabetic sister and mom over the years have one problem after another trying to eat all the carbs they are "supposed to." and get fatter and sicker and have to take yet even more drugs, which then give them complications that require more drugs. Their poor little livers and kidneys must be just about ready to explode under all that strain. They keep getting little precancerous things and heart disease symptoms, etc. but still refuse to give up the carbs because their doctors say they should eat them. They won't even try it for two weeks to see what happens, they are so brainwashed.

I'm so glad to see that at least some people are learning the truth and applying common sense: diabetics can maintain excellent health on low carbs, and get sicker over time on high carbs. Exactly how low a person should go in cutting carbs is up to them according to what is right for them, but I think any plan that is more than about 40 to 50 grams carbs is just asking for trouble. Only a professional athlete should eat more than that.

Hi, good news today, DH got on scales and found he is 13 pounds down since Christmas. We are hoping that he will not have to start on meds when he goes for check up on Thursday. Will keep you posted on his progress.

hi, just popped in to say, the appointment at Diabetic clinic has been delayed for a couple of weeks, so DH will have to wait to hear how he is progressing. I think we should see a good improvement because since Christmas he has kept to low sugar/carb diet. My clothes are getting looser as well.

Im not sure, but I think that when he goes to the clinic for his first appointment with the dietician and nurse who will decide on his treatment, he will be given a blood sugar monitor. We could buy a monitor from a pharmacy but the little sticks cost a fortune, so he wants to wait and see if he get supplies from the clinic.

My insurance paid for the monitor completely, and I have a copay on the strips. I used to test a lot more frequently, but for the longest time it's been almost always in the 90's so I am testing less frequently, not even every day. I test various times, fasting, after meals, and just anytime. For a while I got in the habit of just testing fasting, and that isn't as good as varying it. It was also a good tool for seeing what specific foods gave me spikes. On vacation I found that canteloupes could sent it up 40-50 points over my normal readings. So I dont' eat them any more. That feedback is good to have.

Congrats on the great progress you both have made!

My insurance paid for 2 meters so that I could have one at home and one at work, and I get my strips and lancets free if I run my prescription through my pharmacies Medical Supply desk instead of the Pharmacy counter (no co-pay).

I have brough my A1C down from 9.0 to 7.2 in 3 months (still working to get back to <6, where I used to be before I fell off the wagon). I take 2000 mg of Metformin and 10 mg Glipizide each day. I am working hard on LCing so I can discontinue the Glip, I don't like that it stimulates insulin production. She put me on Lipitor today, but I haven't taken it yet. I need to so some research after reading a thread here about it!

Thanks Dee, how long did it take for you to feel the benefits of keeping your blood sugar under control? My DH still feels exhausted most of the time and he feels 'pressure' in his eyes. Sometimes he has pain behind his eyes, I suppose similar to migraine pain.

The only high carb foods he has been eating are apples, brown rice, oranges, pears, and we dont know how this affects his blood sugar because as yet he hasnt got a monitor. He usually only has one piece of fruit each day. Most days he does not have potatoes or pasta with meals, just protein such as chicken with low carb vegetables. Maybe twice per week we have brown rice with a meal. He says that he never feels hungry and even before going on Atkin's plan he didnt feel hungry either. I always feel hungry, this morning I could hardly wait for my breakfast to cook and now before I go to bed I will have to eat something otherwise I will not get to sleep.

Well, DH had his first appointment at the diabetic clinic. The nurse was helpful and very encouraging. She gave him a blood sugar monitor and told him to see our doctor who will decide whether to start him on meds or try to reduce his blood sugar by diet alone. When he went to the clinic his blood sugar was 11.9, 2 hours after breakfast (porridge) and later, before evening meal it had gone down to 6.3. We are not sure what is good yet. The only thing we do know is that after 6 and a half weeks of trying to keep to low carb foods, he still feels very tired, headachey and just wants to doze all day, until bedtime.

Glad to hear you husband has his monitor now. When does he see the doctor? I was put on metformin, and it helped a lot. Once I started atkins ( a couple years later) I was able to reduce, then totally eliminate the medication. The diabetic teaching I received included advice to eat a lot of carbs, 13 "servings" per day, at 15 g per serving. Hopefully your husband will have better counsel than that!

Sorry he is still feeling so tired. That pressure in the eyes thing sounds unpleasant. He might want to see an eye doctor. It is recommended that diabetes get a dilated eye exam every year to check for changes caused by the diabetes. Did he get an A1c test, it sort of shows an average of how the levels have been for the past 3 months. Hopefully he will soon be feeling much better.

Hi Dee, The A1c test was 6.5 the doctor says this is fine and he will not need to go on meds, at least for the time being. We are hoping that the diabetes has been discovered early enough so that diet alone will be sufficient to prevent some of the nastier problems of diabetes. Meanwhile DH is testing his blood sugar frequently and learning which foods cause spikes.

I hope that other diabetics (newly diagnosed, or experienced) will soon join this thread so we will benefit from each other's experience.

My husband is an insulin dependent diabetic and has been for more than 25 years. He started on an insulin pump I believe 4 1/2 years ago....the best thing he's done! So far he has had no diabetic related complications and this is because he takes super care of himself...it can be done!

From a diet perspective diabetics were always told to "avoid" sugar. Now they are taught to count carbs and fiber...

If anyone ever needs scoop on insulin pumping or insulin dependent diabetes please feel free to PM me as I probably won't read this thread consistently...just caught my eye this morning.

I wish my hubby would take better care of him self.. he was diagnoised with type 1 about 6 years ago.. his sugar level was 900. Yes that is not a misprint.. He adjusts his insulin to what he eats.. Now we found a diabetic specialist.. I didnt know they exsist.. And he doesnt think he is type 1 but type II. He told him the insulin he is taken in the needle is not alot and can be givin in pill form.. But since he has been out of work for 6 months he hasnt gone back for the rest of the tests they wanted to run to make sure..

Type 1 and Type 2 are actually 2 entirely different diseases, I hope he is able to get the doctor soon!

Anyone on Byetta? I just started it 4 days ago. So far so good. Blood sugars were running 180s just on Glucophage, now 112.

I've been on Byetta for the last 6 weeks, and have lost almost ten pounds. I use the 10 mcg pen 2 times a day, along with 1500 mg of Glucophage (Metformin)- 1 pill three times a day.

All the low-carbing and exercise in the WORLD was not helping my blood sugar levels or my weight loss attempts, until I began the Byetta! I love it, even though I've had a few hassles with it (itching, bruising, some nausea, pen backflow, etc).

Hi everyone! Just found this health topic this morning. I was diagnosed with diabetes April of last year. My doctor put me on metformin and has slowly increased me to 1500 mg a day. At times, I can see the difference in my numbers but not all that often. They range from 101-150 still. I hardly ever see a number under 100. I'm trying to watch my diet too and with everything it can be kind of crazy sometimes. My last A1C was this past November and it was 7.8

I have an appointment with the doctor tomorrow for another check up to look at my numbers and discuss the medicine. I'm having some problems with the metformin - tummy problems. Everyone says they go away after some time but after a year it is still there. Sometimes worse than others. Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Also, when I go to the doctor tomorrow I'm suppose to get a referral to diabetic eye specialists. I've noticed a black floater in my left eye that's not huge but I see it. I kind of want to nip anything if it's there before it gets carried away.

Hi Bug,

About the metformin, it caused me to have diarhea most of the time I was on it. The doc offered to switch me to the extrended release, said it was better tolerated. But I then was starting to take supplemental calcium, which has a somewhat opposite effect on the digestion, so it worked out for me.

I'm glad to hear you are getting your eyes checked. They recommend a dilated eye exam once a year to keep track of how/if the diabetes is doing anything to your eyes. So far I am without eye complications. I do have the floaters, sometimes more/bigger than other times. They are related to aging, or so my eye doc claims. Best to get checked to be sure.

Following Atkins rather strictly has really brought my daily numbers down, and my A1c is usually right around 5.3, and I am now off the metformin, since July. Unfortunately, despite staying very clean with my eating, my weight has risen from a low of 163. It is most likey due to my low thyroid function getting even lower, and I am working with a doc to get my levels right again. But it may also be related to going off the metformin.

Good luck with your next appointment, let us know how it goes. Maybe check out if you could try the extended release version of the meds.

Do you still have the floaters? My husband has diabetic retinopathy and has lost sight in his left eye in the past couple of weeks. Of course, there were other complications also but the main cause was because of his diabetes. This has me worried about my sight, as it would anyone, you know.

My blood sugar numbers are low considering some of the other numbers I have seen people have. I have not seen them come down with the aid of the metformin. I have tried hanging in there with the medication but sometimes I think it's getting the worse of me. I will speak with my doctor about it tomorrow to see what she thinks.

Yes I still have floaters. I don't know if the older ones get re-absorbed and somehow go away, but they do get better. Then new ones come. They always make me think they're a flying insect when they first come. But floaters like this are not considered a problem, just part of getting older. The brain sort of learns to ignore them I think.

What we have to be careful and aware of, is the bleeding into the eye that can come from diabetes. High blood sugar levels cause a proliferation of the tiny vessels in the eye, so it make a lot of them, and they are thin walled. They can bleed, which causes a darkening or clouding of the vision. If you have this, even before it bleeds, the eye doctor may want to laser the vessels to prevent the problem. My SIL has had this several times. She bled a lot, and it is very slowly clearing up for her.

When they dilate your eyes, they look around at the vessels there and can tell if they are they kind that the diabetes can cause. Hope that made sense, and hope you do not have any of the kind that tend to bleed.

Went to my doctor today for my diabetic check up. She is changing my meds around a bit. Taking me back to 500 mg of Metformin and putting me also on 15 mg of Actos - both once a day. Will see if this makes any changes. Also gave me a referral to the eye doctor. My appointment with them isn't until 3/7/06.

Hopefully, this change in med's will move things around for me. Also took blood and urine for work up. Thank goodness I didn't eat this morning before I saw her. I should have those results back at the end of the week. Will keep everyone posted.

Nice to see a diabetic thread. Even on the OLD carb friend's layout/format whenever typing Diabetes in search, there wasn't much. Surprised, since diabetes is such a rampant disease. Is there a search box for a specific subject here in this new-ish format? I can't find it.

thanks i got it and always saw it there, but as on the old format I thought it was just to locate PEOPLE cause the TOPIC search was always a different isolated box differently displayed and in ADDITION to that, but it worked,thanks. Still not much on diabetes....wish it were dying out as it is here on this forum lol

PS.....now i remember what the problem always was even on the old format..... you put in a subject [like diabetes] and you don't just get diabetes topics, but every other topic too. I wonder why. The whole idea of search is to eliminate the time consumption of scrolling through everything ELSE to find what you're looking for, but even putting one subject in search, you still get ALL subjects and have pages of all other thread topics to scroll through, which 'search' was supposed to eliminate.
