Natural thyroid medications

I suspect I have a underactive thyroid. Symptoms are: weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, and a family history. I have had my thyroid tested and it checks out ok. However, is there a herbal or over the counter medication I could try? If my thyroid is normal would it be dangerous to treat it? How about with prescription medications?

It depends on the test that your doctor ordered. Most docs just order a tsh test which is for the most part useless. What you'll want to do is to ask your doc for more tests. If he or she won't test anything other than tsh, then it would be great if you could find a doc that tests more. This is a US wide problem with doctors.

If you're hypothyroid, nothing OTC will help.

However, a problem with labs is that often you experience symptoms well before your labs indicate the problem. For 5 years, although my primary doctor did a complete thyroid work up (TSH, T4, T3), he told me that my escalating symptoms were just 'normal aging'--and I went along with that--until my symptoms were so severe that I knew something was wrong.

When I self-referred to an endo, she diagnosed me immediately based on my symptoms--and she told me that many patients are 'sub-clinical'--that is, their labs look 'normal,' but they have obvious hypo symptoms.

I've since been diagnosed with Hashimoto's.

A good thyroid doctor will diagnose based on both labs and symptoms--but those good doctors can be hard to find. I was lucky.

Perhaps you could say 'where' you are (closest major city, etc.) and someone here on the boards might have a really good thyroid doctor they could recommend

IF you could find something "natural" that helped a problem this severe, it would be MORE dangerous than prescription meds. Anything that powerful always has a lot of different effects on the body, and supplements have not been tested even as well as the iffy testing prescription drugs get. This is a case where you need the doctor. Good luck!

and yes, if your thyroid is normal and you took prescription meds designed for hypothyroids, it would be VERY bad, not only immediately but longer term. thankfully it would be very difficult to get them without the proper medical supervision.
Often I don't come back to read threads where I've posted. If you want me to see something, please send me a private message. Thanks!

"and it checks out ok", meaning it was somewhere within the range? Not really specific enough. Where in range. Do you have the results with the ranges?
